I'd get blown, unless you really need to turbo it.

Yeah, I was going to mention something about the ability for turbo cars to build way more boost off the line with a 2-step, but I didn't want to confuse people with techno mumbo jumbo.

There are a few out there doing some serious EFI development work in the drag racing arena. Sonny Leonard recently developed an 815 cubic-inch V8 that puts out 1,765 HP, and that's WITHOUT turbos, superchargers, or putting it on Nitrous!!!

Yes Marc, I am looking for that violent, neck snapping acceleration Although its not going to happen with the Jag XKR as I am finding out, had it up to 200k with ease, but too many cops around this weekend

Im an old school charger guy but the new turbo technology is great. I love my turbo F 350 dually but still have a ball with the old 712 hemi with the 14-71 blower on it Either way in your case your looking at a stock transportation vehicle, it makes no difference what you get when its all said and done

Love the syclone, it kicks serious ass.

The excursion was a blast, I dont have it anymore cuz it started falling apart. I guess that's what happens though when you slap 39" tires and an 8" lift on it. Not to mention all the power upgrades, that fucker was mean and would smoke the tires off the line.

And what isnt to love about a 4 door, 2.0L 4cyl. grocery getter that will cook ferrari's stock. I love the EVO and plan on pushing it to 600+ HP.

In the market for a new car soon... was thinking one of these maybe a good new addition:

Turbo's run off of the engines exhaust. While Super charger runs off the engine itself.

Thus turbos are more efficient, and are a better bang for the buck.

Turbo makes acceleration violent, neck snapping, and much more fun!

Get a roots style supercharger (eaton, jackson, ken-belle etc). They deliver ALOT more low end torque then a centrifigal (vortech) supercharger or a turbo system (ack!). All of the superchargers you see on factory cars are roots style for a reason. They are much more reliable and deliver low end torque far superior to anything short of more displacement or a no2 system.

Some bizarre advice in this thread...

First off (although the original poster isn't), you wouldn't/shouldn't simply bolt either onto a stock engine, without doing other tuning mods at the same time and without preparing the engine for the extra power.

Second, specifically what mods and preparation depends on your basic motor. And whether a turbo or a supercharger depends largely on what is available for a specific engine. Although a turbocharger is more efficient on paper, because it isn't driven by engine power, the kits available for different engines vary widely in what they will add.

Again, on paper, a turbocharger will suffer some lag as it winds up, but as some have already noted, there are ways around that. On the other side of the coin, you can induce lag in everyday driving conditions, whether you have a turbocharger or a supercharger, simply by having too wild a cam profile or with a dubious choice of gear ratios.

In other words, the choice for whatever kind of performance you are looking for isn't simply turbocharger or supercharger, but rather how your whole engine and drive-train is set up.

They deliver ALOT more low end torque then a centrifigal (vortech) supercharger or a turbo system (ack!). All of the superchargers you see on factory cars are roots style for a reason. They are much more reliable and deliver low end torque far superior to anything short of more displacement or a no2 system.

Turbochargers sound great at higher RPM's. Supercharges make a whining noise that is annoying as all hell.

Damn. Someone rename this thread "proof that half the people on GFY will cheerfully post authoritive sounding comments about topics they don't even begin to understand."

Both superchargers and turbos have their place. In the case of the XKR, I think I would trust Jaguar to have carefully considered the tradeoff and gone with the right one for that particular motor and car.

In general, which one you pick depends on the NA power curve of the motor and the application you're going for. For any kind of twistiies, like a road course or autocross, the last thing you want is a huge spike in power that murphy's law is going to cause to happen right when you get on it at corner exit every time. For straight line drag racing, spikes don't matter so much. Beyond that, superchargers generally come on at lower RPM's, so if you're wanting to get some extra power down low, that's probably the way to go. However, if you want to go screaming around a track at 90% of redline and have max power up there, a turbo will generally be the choice.

However, my real advice would be to take the question to a car-centric board where you'll get a higher percentage of people actually making sense.
