                      The answer varies with how much work you want to do with it. If you just want to let it sit split it up between bonds and index funds. If you want to be active then invest it in whatever you are good at and know a lot about.

                                                                                                                                                                          Huge risk here in the states. 1st mortgages always get paid first and that's sometimes all that gets covered. If the owner goes into bankruptcy or foreclosure, you'll never see your money again.
