Let us know if any of the actual SEO tips in the book (that aren't just common sense or widely known standards) help your bottom line. I'd be leery of a book on Google, given the lead time it takes to get a book to market and the obvious changes Google is regularly making.

Not books, I meant I was reading forums and stuff, I figured any book on seo would pretty much be out of date before it even hit the shelves

Type in S.E.O in google and read the top ten results each with over 100's of articles and fourms.

My hardest part of seo has been that much of my results are thwarted by people abusing for short-term gain; those who put up throwaway sites to continuously spam Google and those who grab your text and add it to tons of doorway and redirect pages

To add: There's no money in "whitehat" SEO. Knowing all the basics is important of course so read up, but to get serious and target (and succeed) at the competitive words you will have a really tough time competing against the pros honestly.
