Home Theatre System question.

Tomorrow we're going out looking to buy a new tv and a home theatre system to go with it.
I know the type of tv I want so my question lies with the audio stuff.
Is it better to have more watts? What all does it mean?

RMS power vs. peak power
Don't be confused by "peak power" and "RMS power" ratings. Simply put, RMS wattage ratings are a measure of continuous power ? while different manufacturers will use somewhat different methods to come up with these figures, it's usually a more "real-life" rating of your equipment's capabilities. Peak power, on the other hand, doesn't try to reflect realistic operation. It's simply a measure of how much power can be generated or handled for very short bursts.

Many manufacturers emphasize peak power ratings by stamping these ratings on their subwoofers and amplifiers. Peak power ratings are not realistic measures of the true power capabilities of the equipment. By comparing the RMS power rating of the sub and the RMS power rating of the amp, you'll have the tools you need to pick the right equipment.

Yes, higher wattage numbers are better. Keep in mind some companies don't rate wattage equally. When comparing wattage numbers make sure they are giving you the rating from 20hz to 20khz, less than 1% distortion and all channels driven. For example, some of Pioneer's cheaper receivers are rated as 100 watts per channel, but only at 1khz. So you are really not getting a true 100 watts per channel.

Don't worry too much about wattage though. When purchasing a receiver, think about all the components you need to hook up to it, and some components you might want to add in the future, and make sure it has all the necessary video and audio connections to support that.

Some things to look for in a receiver are HDTV component video switching and enough digital audio inputs. At least 2 coax and 2 optical is a good idea.

Spend a little more on the receiver now and you won't have to upgrade for a long time.

cuz i was looking at panasonic stuff.
one was a 500 watt system and one was a 1000 watt system.
the 500 watt one is like $100 cheaper so if it didn't really make a difference, i'd take the less expensive one.

Get the most clean power you can get... compare rms numbers and look for low THD

inputs & Outputs are important too

well the 1000watt one i was looking at says:
total output power 580W
front 100w x 2
center 140w
surround 45w x 2
subwoofer 150w

how is that?

I wouldn't buy a Panasonic home theater system, unless you just want something cheap.

You can get an entry level Pioneer or Denon receiver real cheap and then just add decent speakers and a sub and you will have a much better system.

i'm just looking for a basic setup to use with my tv.
i don't want to spend a whole bunch of money. i just want something to listen to my dvds thru. lol

what kind of price range are you thinking about for this purchase?

oh, and anyone who tells you that the more wattage the better doesn't know what their talking about... some of the most expensive amplifiers in the world output *1w*, its all about SET (single-ended triode) and the sensitivity of your monitors/speakers..

...promise her a defamation, tell her where the rain will fall..

Ahh OK, that will probably be fine then. I got a little carried away on my system. I even bought some home theater seats with the little cup holders in the arms and I have a 15 inch subwoofer that shakes the whole house.

But she is talking about a home theater system. No one is going to use a 1 watt class a amp for a home theater system. It's just not going to work worth a shit.

yeah this isn't like "theatre" theatre system. i just meant a system where everythign came together to use in my living room. eventually we'd like to create a theatre room with the seats and all but not just yet.

ive owned panasonic in the past and had nothing but problems. they're just cheaply made and have a tendency to burn up. pioneer is better quality and more dependable. im sure they'll both work for simple dvd watching so get whatever you think will look good in your room. i like everything hidden, so i went with the small black speaker setup. they work just as good as the big ones

go for a Denon Receiver 5.1 or 5.2 and get all the same brand speakers I personally like Klipsch.

I don't think she wants to spend that much But that is what I went with. I have a Denon reciever that will do 7.1 , Klipsch RC 35, RF 35's for mains, RB 35's for the rears. And a Titanic 15" sub. Yes I can shake walls too.

I spent way too much on mine..
Pioneer VSX 49TXi with umm... speakers.. good speakers, I just don't remember the kind
eitherway... spending 6X more than a 'normal' set up gets you sound that's not even twice as good...
maybe if you're a TRUE audiophile, you'll notice a difference
