    How Much Did Your First House Cost?

    I'm looking around, thinking of buying my first house, in Scotland prices are pretty high. Since I'll be living on my own, and paying it on my own then it seems more expensive than some of my friends who share with there girlfriends or whatever. My girlfriend won't be moving in with me, not yet anyway.

    Anyway, some I like the look of are ranging between $250K - $330K.
    Being 3 bedrooms to 4 bedrooms with garage and conservatory.

    How much did you guys pay for your first house?

                  If you are paying anything over 200k in Scotland for a 2-3 bedroom house you are being ripped off.

                  I can get a 4 bedroom in Windsor for 200k with a double garage and about an acre of property.

                      I hate to see housing prices in other countries. The appartment I am currently living in is valued $228.000 allready. 2 bedrooms. I would never buy this, a nice/good house in over here would start at about $300k and then you won;t even have a fancy/big house. Just a normal nice one.

                                                                              I'd say around $300K to $400K. A 4th bedroom really jacks up the price. In Shropshire where I live a 2 bedroom apartment will cost you about $600K to $1.2 million. A townhouse, nothing less than $2million and a decent house outside of town, anywhere from $800K to about $4million.

                                                                              And London is twice as bad if not worse.

                                                                              We also get hardly any land with out properties. I was looking at houses to buy for summer vacation in Maine around the $300K mark. Holy Cow! 5 and 6 bedrooms, a few acres of land, swimming pool, near a lake. If not for the laws we'd be out there!

                                                                                              1st house in 1998 - $70k for a townhouse on the river in Philadelphia....Sold 1 year later for the same I bought it for thanks to a new prison being built.

                                                                                              2nd house in 2001 - $97k in Plymouth Meeting Pa and now homes in my development sell at close to 300k thanks to the real estate explosion here. Its totally insane what people pay for a house compared to what you did 4 years ago.

                                                                                              My Advice to you looking to buy a house: Get a decent fixxer upper in a decent area on the cheap. You'll always want to change things no matter how new a house is when you 1st get it. Its much better to save some coin for the remodeling you'll be doing in no time.

                                                                                                      Some nice stories in here, seems a lot of you have made some cool cash on buying properties.

                                                                                                      The houses I am looking at now are Fixed Price. Basically its the bottom price you would pay, since its a brand new built house. Once I buy, I can sell it on for a profit immediately. The housing market is insane over here.

                                                                                                      It would be weird going from not having many bills each month to suddenly paying around $2.5K per month for a mortgage and all the things that come with owning a house

                                                                                                      But I suppose its well worth it!

                                                                                                                      A lot of people rush into things that they probably should not. The house I am closing on Tuesday with, took me 5 months of going back and forth before I decided to take the plunge. I suppose on one hand you could say I was somewhat lucky no one else picked it up in the meantime, but then again I am one of those types of people that would say, "Well, if it wasn't meant to be, then it wasn't meant to be" had someone else bought it

His wife had died and he just wanted out. When I left Mississippi I sold it for 'slightly' more than I paid for it!

It was a HUD home and the previous owner used the house as a kennel shortly before he was evicted. After 2000+ man hours and about 15k in Home Depot purchases we sold it one year later for 89k. We would have gotten more but I was in a bind and was moving to Miami and needed the home sold in one week.

                                                                                                                                                              I don't know what part of the USA your talking about, but in Miami one bedroom condos are sold left and right for $300k +++. the 300k is really entry level and it gets you shitty view, shitty floor.

                                                                                                                                                              The median home price in Miami is currently $336,000 right now. In Broward county (Ft Lauderdale area for those not familiar with South Florida) its even higher at $343,900.

                                                                                                                                                              There was an article in the newpaper here just this week where a Merrill Lynch study concluded Miami has the highest disparity between housing price increases in the past decade versus income growth. The Affordabilty gap has gotten so wide down here in South Florida that Merrill Lynch concluded Miami housing was the biggest bubble in the nation.

I just laughed when they told me what I was "qualified" for. I made sure the RE agent never knew and got exactly what I wanted for a price I can still cover the mortgage on if I ever need to waitress at the Waffle House

And I did mention - in another post - where I was considering buying myself: maine. It's really no biggy, i dont want a huge debate. It's simply common knowledge to any Brit that property prices (on average) in the U.S are pretty cheap (relative to our own).

Bought for 73k Sterling ($139k) in 2000, sold for 165k Sterling ($314k) in 2004. Now have five bedroom detached also in East Midlands, bought for 300k Sterling ($570k) in 2004, worth same today.

When I was last in London a few years ago, I stopped into a realtor in Wimbleton and took a look at the prices. Needless to say I will not be buying any homes in Wimbleton anytime soon lol.

                                                                                                                                                                                  I still do think $350k is alot for a 500 sf apt on the first floor facing the parking lot and dumpsters. Since 2001 Miami median housing prices have jumped 87%. Salaries meanwhile have not jumped 87% so alot of people in Miami are forced into renting. This is the problem I was really getting at, I certainly wasnt implying that the USA is unique in absurd housing costs.
