Do you do your own home improvement?

I need to change a ceiling fan and some other household type handyman stuff, but I'm discovering I have absolutely no idea how to actually do any of that stuff. Do you guys do your own household handyman type work or do you hire someone for it?

        My husband does it.

If you are renting , you might want to check your lease. I know in California you are not suppose to do any of the electrical work. My ex-renter had her bf put in a new fan ( the old one was fine and working ) and caused major electrical problems..then the bimbo tried to blame us..

I'm all thumbs but I have installed three ceiling fans (make sure you turn off the juice), install an a/c, put on new wall covering on the basement living room & stairs & some other minor stuff. I won't touch the plumbing or major electrical problems because both are old here. I changed a light fixture one time & had to rewire half the house. To this day, we still don't know what happened. Yes, the light socket was connected right...

I do all home improvements myself ... And there is a lot to do.. (the house is from 1916) and the stuff I can't do myself I get my hubby to do..

I think it's fun to run around and play handyman and build shit..

And then... if I can do it my self...why hire som smelly handyman(?) (IRL they just don't look like they do on TV )

I'm woman damit...hear me roar.. (now with powertool's)

I plan on buying a place, and since I cant afford a new house, I am gonna have to settle on a used place.

Meaning I will have to do some work or hire someone for it. I did a stint in construction (two summers) and know I am not so handy... but I dont like paying some ass to fuck up shit anyways...

                                  hmm,

Depends on nature of work to be done....

small hosehold chores, yeah I'll 'attempt it myself first and when that fails...which is normally the case, I'll call in some pro's.

Large jobs, like new additions to a house, installing a fence, etc, etc, ...fuck no..I'm too damn lazy...plus I wouldn't know where to begin!
Sticks an stones may break my bones but words may devastate my inner child for ever!

Watch HGTV for a couple days, go to a how to at the hardware chain for something close to what you need to do and you should be fine.

I am assuming you don't plan on using anything more than a power drill right?

a little bit.... I mean I restored my car that I have now, and I lightly maintained an 18-wheeler for a long time, but could I tear down an engine or transmission anymore and rebuild it? Probly not... haven't done that since '85.

I worked heavy construction for 12 years. I hold a I.E.B.W Journeyman Wiremans licence, including Class A high voltage spicing licence and Class A welding licence.

I can pretty much do anything from Electricity , Carpentry, Steel and Metal Work both welding and on a mill, Plumbing , Concrete and Masonry, Paint. ect.

I have built houses and worked on some of the biggest construction projects going on in the US during the 90's.

So I can pretty much install a ceiling fan with my eyes closed.

As well you should. I was going to offer similar advice. I buy and rent fixer uppers, and I seek out retired carpenters, electricians, plumbers etc., that are bored, or want a little extra income to go with their pensions, to do the work. They work cheaper than "active duty carpenters" and though they are sometimes alittle slow, they know what they are doing and do good work.
