You obviously didn't understand what the movie was about at all. I read the book, and it was pretty true to it. The movie was more about the hard times the guys who raised the flag had with being called "heros". Their personal trama with seeing what they did, and wondering why they were not killed, and feeling guilty about it.
I thought it was a great movie.
