Why delete a page when you can put up text?

With the new 2257 law coming into effect many are finding they don't have and can't find the proper documentation. So are deleting pages leaving nothing but a 404 to greet the surfer.

Why not take out the non compliant images and put up some SE optimized text telling the surfer what is in store for him if he clicks on the links?

Seems better than a 404 both for everyone all round, the surfer, affilaite, freesite owner and sponsor.

Must be some flaw in my scheme, so feel free to tell me why.

Don't expect people tearing down their sites in a fit of panic to do it in a logical manner

They probably 404 to text. Impossible to change 20k galleries over fast enough.

That problem is easily avoided by anyone with some decent apache/scripting knowledge. You could 404 everything, or a significant amount of the site, all at once, depending on where the SE content is.

Lets take a free site as an example:

LL owner has traffic and provide free pictures for its surfers.

Free Site owner shits his pants due to 2257 and takes down the free pictures and changes the site to something completely different without telling the LL owner.

          Not cool!

If they 404 the site, , or send a mail to the owner, the linkbot ow owner will just pull the sites. End of story. It's the right thing to do if you delete the content from the site. Any other tricks and you will just end up getting blacklisted.

You're assuming these are normal times and the submitter will not tell the LL owner.

TGP, LL owners I'm hereing are being flexible at the moment. but best if they delete the link from their page altogether.

We're flexible, but replacing pictures with text is not cool.

The only person who wins on that is the free site owner. How happy will the link list surfers be if every other site only has text and no pictures?

How happy will he be if he's redirected to a 404 page?

But maybe you are right, one of the things I did not think of is the extra work.

he won't see the 404 because that gets detected by the bots ;)

the LL bots will detect its 404 and pull the site, and if the site webmaster has notified the LL owner he wont get blacklisted.....

                        simple solution and fast

use 301 redirect to a Text TGP
page rank transfers across and so will traffic with nasty bounces

Drop this into the htaccess file in the parent folder or public folder that you wsh to direct elsewhere

                        redirect 301 /old/old.htm http://www.you.com/texttgphtm

Yeah, that will get you blacklisted real fast.

What Mefo and Nicky said. The bot takes care of that automagically.
