Google is now behind Opera as they have a deal to be the primary search for Opera and they're pushing for Opera to become the browser of choice for mobile products. So anyone not ensuring their sites operate in it are going to be losing out.
Probably the main reason they're not as popular is because they had the ads. Those went away with the Google deal so now they're playing catch up.
The new version of Opera also has some bittorrent stuff in it but I haven't checked it out.
I love the transfer feature in Opera for when you're downloading lots of content zips, videos etc. all of it listed on the one page, restart and stop control etc.
