The SLK, not the SL, was the first mercedes to have the retractable top. The SL didn't receive a retractable top until the redesign in 2003. Up until 2002, it was soft top with a plastic rear window and an optional, big, clunky removable hardtop & the price was still in the 90k range. So for 40k you had a retractable top on the SLK; for 90k you had inconvenience for the SL.Comment
