The hard drive cases are built to be insanely resistant to magnets. I'd recommend feeding them too much electricity and blowing them out.

Put them on(in) the grill, ~600-700°C should destroy most magnetic storage devices

depends how destroyed you want them
drilling a hole through the guts of them usally does the job , well a few holes

frying it with electricty only hurts the circuit board , the plates where all the date is held will still be readable

a strong electro magnet will kill the plates , , or shove em in the microwave

3. low zero format + reinstall data
4. low zero format then fill the entire disk with a shredder tool (fills it with 1 and 0's) then relow format again

low0 format would be best BUT.. i dont want to hook these disks up..too much work.

what always works is banging a nail or screwdriver through the top. It will physically destroy all the disks inside. Close to impossible to recover that data.

Drill a hole through them as others have suggested, do a few for good measure. This stops the average joe and even the experienced johns from being able from getting at your data though it will do nothing for a data recovery clinic with a clean room (they’ll be able to get the majority of your data quite easily).

If you are afraid someone might get the data forget low formating or any software. Someone that knows what they are doing could get the data that you thought you erased.

There's some machines made just for erasing drives that cost about 3k+, they contain really strong magnets. I guess you could take the drives to a junkyard and see if they will let you use their magnets.

Drilling holes through the drive(s) is probably best Idea I've seen posted here if you can't afford a 3k+ magnet machine, whatever it's called. ;)

drill a 1/4 inch hole through them
put a 1/4 inch threaded eye hook through them
put the eye hooks on a 5 foot chain
attach the 5 foot chain to your car
take a long trip on the freeway @ 60 miles / hr - for about 2 - 3 hours should do the trick

they look like little disc brake pads....
