kroq 106.7 is a station that primarily deals with more of an alternative lineup, but in the past vfew years have been starting to play more rock.... i.e. Motley Crue has a new song they are playing currently...

Same here. My current new favorite is
WONC Pure Rock 89.1 , a non-commercial station from Naperville, IL that calls their format "Pure Rock from the classics to the cutting edge". If you like punk/hardcore/ska check out their program All Ages Radio. They have several months worth of it and their other programs on demand in their ARCHIVE. Good stuff

When I lived in LA, the best station (in my mind at least) was KCRW 89.9FM I am not sure if they'd feature your story though since they are part of NPR ;)
