    Cinderella Man

I went to the sneak preview of it today...........and it was brilliant. This movie is, yes, even better than "Million Dollar Baby," and dare I say it, even better than "Rocky." It was a magnificent film, capturing all the mood and desperation of the Great Depression. This film is better than any other movie Ron Howard has made, better than "A Beautiful Mind." And the boxing action was terrific. Easily the best movie of the year so far........and its a shame it probably won't win Best Picture because last years winner, Million Dollar Baby, was also a boxing film. But it most certainly will be nominated for Best Picture.

The acting was great, and there were some shots in it, I won't say as to give them away, especially during some boxing sequences, that gave me some chills they were so effective and good.

Prediction: Paul Giamitti will win Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gould, Braddick's trainer.

Folks, don't miss this one when it comes out in wide release.

Who is the boxer? I thought it was Rocky Marciano for some reason at first but don't know.

                    Max Baer

an interesting note about Max Baer, the Heavyweight champ who killed two men in the ring..........his son, Max Baer Jr, was Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies (one gazinta two twice, two gazinta four twice.........)

funny you said that because I checked out Star Wars 3 that very evening, for my second time.......and I really liked Star Wars 3, despite its shortcomings........I'd rank it 3rd out of all 6 movies........but it doesn't compare to "Cinderella Man." CM was brilliant. Its easily one of the greatest sports movies of all time.

And the sneak previewers are starting to show up on the imdb........check out its sky-high ranking:

I may just go see Star Wars to "get it out of the way". I'm not crazy about them but I've seen the other 5 so what the hell.

you can't go wrong with the third Star Wars movie, ROTS, its good.

but Cinderella Man, make sure you don't miss that one. You'll be hearing more raves about it when it gets released this Friday, I believe, from other GFY members, I am certain.

Thomas Newman is at it again..........fantastic music score.......great.......he's also done other notables like "Shawshank Redemption", "American Beauty," "Road to Perdition," etc. He's got an amazing body of work to his credit, and "Cinderella Man" soundtrack is right up there with the others. Funny how music can add superbly to a great film, as "Cinderella Man" is, or even break a film if its bad.

yeah thats the nickname some newspaper writer gave James Braddock as he began his 'rising up from his ashes or cinders' as Cinderella did.

I just learned Russell Crowe dislocated his shoulder while training for the film's boxing sequences, which delayed the filming two months. When you see the movie, you'll understand why. The boxing is intense but realistic.

Russell Crowe reunited with Ron Howard and my first reaction is ?Hmm, somebody?s definitely fishing for more awards.? After the success of A Beautiful Mind, who could blame them? When the early marketing focused too much on the past success of Howard and Crowe, my doubt about the Jim movie began to grow. Isn?t it nice when your doubts are unfounded? While possibly not on the same level of Mind in the critic world, Cinderella Man delivers another knockout hit for the Crowe/Howard tandem.

Despite being an unlikable fellow in reality, Russell Crowe keeps churning out outstanding roles that draw me to the theatre. Crowe?s portrayal of a sports legend continues his streak of powerful cinematic performances. Cinderella Man is the story of James J. Braddock, a rising star in the light heavyweight boxing ring during the late 1920s. His rise up the ranks is coldly halted as the stock market crash of 1929 cripples the American economy. With a string of losses, injuries, and the end of his big paydays, Braddock suffers the same fate that thousands of other Americans felt during the Great Depression.

After losing his personal fortune, Braddock struggles to provide for his wife (Zelweger) and children while never fully giving up his dream of returning to boxing. Due to a last minute cancellation and a recommendation by his old manager (Giamatti), Braddock gets one last chance at glory and cements his place in boxing history.

It is Crowe?s portrayal of Braddock that keeps Cinderella Man from slipping into the clichéd territory of Rocky. Braddock fights, not for glory, but to provide for his family. Along the way, Braddock becomes a hero and gives hope to other people struggling to survive the times.

Come on; hope being a central theme of a movie? Hasn?t that been done to death? Yet, I found myself falling for it completely. Crowe?s accent and look is a perfect capsule of the time and his boxing style is a perfect copy of Braddock?s. Did it take me this long to finally mention the boxing matches? Don?t think this is some boring historical crap starring Brendan Gleeson (Seriously, that guy is in all of em). The boxing matches in Cinderella Man are hands down the best ever replicated on the big screen. The Braddock fights are for folks who grew up with Rocky but now require realistic boxing and not to mention better acting in their films. The film's stunning cinematography draws you into the ring, and leaves you feeling like you're sitting there in person. I?m not even a boxing fan, but I found myself completely thrilled by the action.

Besides Crowe and the boxing scenes, the other bright spot in this film is Paul Giamatti?s portrayal of manager Joe Gould. Some will question Giamatti playing the comedic wise ass in yet another movie, but it?s a good move for him. Fresh off critical praise for Sideways, Giamatti can cash in with a blockbuster that will be seen by a much larger audience. Unlike other roles he?s had in, Giamatti?s character is more than just punch lines; he does an outstanding job of showing the heart of Joe Gould. Zellweger is adequate enough as Braddock?s wife, I can think of dozens of actresses who I?d prefer to see in a movie, but at least she isn?t as annoying as normal. That?s high praise from me considering the sight of those cheeks usually causes me to suffer an uncontrollable eye twitch. Oh come on, you were thinking it!

Director Ron Howard has a knack for heartwarming tales that while sometimes dangerously close to falling into the ?sappy? territory, always manage to build a bond between the viewer and the characters. A great example of this is his other ?based on a true story? epic, Apollo 13. I cheered for the astronauts when the came back home and my heart raced as Braddock battled in the ring. If history bores you, see this for the fights. If you aren?t a boxing fan, you?ll be fascinated by the story and the acting. Cinderella Man, while it appeals to a wide audience, doesn?t compromise; a quality Mr. Braddock would be proud of.

They said that we were the first people in Minnesota to see the move. Well, let me just say that this is one of the best movies that I've ever seen - Russell Crowe and Ron Howard have done it again! It starts a bit slow, but it gives you background into the life of Jimmy Braddock, a once great boxer who fell into hard times because of the great depression. Him and his family experienced all the heartaches that everyone else did at that time.

Even though he retired from boxing (he was viewed as a joke), his manager (Giamatti) got him one fight against a #1 contender to the belt. Everyone expected Jimmy to lose....I'll leave you to see the movie from here on out! Everyone was SUPERB in their roles, and there's no reason that Crowe, Giamatti, Zellweger, and Howard shouldn't be up for nominations. It was an outstanding movie, my heart was POUNDING during the last 15 minutes. After the movie, everyone stood up and cheered...EVERYONE! It was fabulous, and plan on seeing it again when it comes out Nationwide. Go see this movie!!!!"

                                                                                          "This is a classic film."

Everything from the acting to the soundtrack is simply outstanding. The audience is involved not only emotionally, but also physically. When a punch is landed on Braddock, the audience pulls back in pain with him."

"This movie makes my top 10 list of Dramatic movies from the last decade. A definite must see."

I know a lot of you missed on the theatrical run of "Shawshank Redemption" judging by how poorly it did at the box office. Now everyone I know owns a copy of "Shawshank" on DVD and it most certainly is one of the most beloved movies of all time. Its a classic that almost everyone missed on at the theater.

Don't make the same mistake again by missing out on "Cinderella Man" at the theater. I'm not saying its as good as "Shawshank", after all, how many movies really are?........but its going to be seen as an American classic movie.
