    Some people are just assholes

    I had a strange experience today.

    I was in my car going through the drive-thru ATM. There was one car in front of me. The driver of that car not only leaves her card in the machine, she leaves her wallet on top of it. I tried to flag her down as she drove off, but she didn't see me.

    I look at the card and see it is a business card. The wallet is a Prada wallet so likely not very cheap. I call the business and ask if they have a woman by this name working there. They tell me she is the owner. I explain about the ATM card/wallet and they give me the woman's cell phone number. I call her, tell her what happened and she tells me she will come back to where I am and meet me to get her wallet and card. Great.

    I wait about 20 minutes for her. When she gets there I give her the wallet. She takes it, looks through it and sees nothing is missing (including the cash that was in it) and then she glares at me and rudely says, "You should have just taken it into the bank and given it to them." I tell her I was just trying to do something nice and get her wallet back to her as quickly as possible. She basically snarls at me and says, "Nice guys finish last." Then walks away, gets in her car and leaves.

    What a bitch.

When I called her I explained to her that I was behind her at the ATM and she accidentally left her wallet on the machine and her card in it and that I have it. I asked her if she wants to come get it from me or what she wants to do. She said she would meet me and get it. I told her what kind of car I drive and that I would see her when she got here.

                  When she arrived she walked over to me, asked if it was me. I said yes (I recognized her car so I had been waving to her as she pulled into the parking lot). I handed her wallet and card to her. So really, the only word I had said at that moment was "yes." She takes them, opens up the wallet and looks through it, puts her card back in it then puts the wallet in her purse. Then she looks up at me and says, "You should have just taken it into the bank."

                  I was shocked. I wasn't expecting her to give me anything, but I assumed she would say thank you.

                          I believe this story. There was a thread I was reading on Reddit a while back full of these kind of stories where some ungrateful asshole either called the police and accused the person returning a wallet which was found with cash missing of being the thief or one case where a person returning a wallet was asked to wait outside some wealthy person's home at the doorstep while the live in nanny or maid brought the wallet in to their employer to make sure nothing was missing before rudely dismissing them by threatening to call neighborhood security without even in person thanks from the owner.

                                      The funny thing was the reason I decided to not just take the wallet inside the bank and give it to them was something that had happened to me about 20 years ago. I had just moved from Portland to Los Angeles. I had only been there a few weeks when I lost my wallet at a grocery store. I didn't have a California drivers license yet so when the person looked in my wallet all they found my my license from Oregon. Instead of just tossing the wallet or turning it into the store they actually drove around the neighborhood for two hours looking for a car that had Oregon plates. When they found the car they found me and gave me my wallet back. I was floored that they would go to those lengths to do that for me.

                                      So when I found her wallet I decided to pay it back and get it back to her ASAP instead of her having to go through the hassle of having the bank call her etc.

                                      Apparently she didn't appreciate my good will.

                                              Found a woman's wallet a few months back, called the # on a card from inside, she asked for me to give it to the workers in the coffee shop next door. No thanks or anything. Should have just poured the contents on the ground and left after talking to her on the phone.
