    anyone running Windows XP 64bit?

I'm debating on building a new box with an AMD64 chip.. have any of you moved to the 64bit Windows XP? If so, do you notice any performance enhancements? Whats the verdict on it.

I was running it on both my desktop (dual opteron) and my laptop (athlon64-M), and I noticed a performance boost, as a whole, but it was especially pronouced for 64 bit applications.

If you want real 64 bit power, go to linux, where you can compile everything for a 64 bit march.

That hasn't been my experience, or that of anyone whom I've recommended A64.

You must still be thinking of the betas......

Sounds good. I have a few applications that I plan to run that are 64bit. For the most part, the box will be dedicated to them.

How did you acquire the XP 64bit software? Is it just an XP Pro 32bit upgrade off the m$ website?

No, its an install of its own that requires its own disc to be used on a fresh system.

Beta -> MSDN -> Lost the fucking disc so I downloaded it

Where did you download it? If you get a chance could you post the URL?

There is an ISO scene rip of it but i'd like to be legit.

Did you happen to get an MSI mobo? If so you can get a free copy from them.

                    Private FTP, sorry.

As for the scene release, I can't vouch for its authenticity or quality, since I haven't paid attention to it, nor do I have any confirmed good hash values.

I've got an MSI K8T Master2 FAR, and I love it.

Oh, also, don't buy from tigerdirect. They're really expensive.

I'd go with the 64 bit Mac if I were you, at least give it a serious look.

There are no 64 bit applications in that you would use at this time. The only 64 bit apps are things like Industrial Light and Magics software for 3D morphing effects.

There are NO major virus software venders or firewall ones with an app that works in a 64 bit environment. Why? Because those apps use low level code to run in 32 bit and it hasn't been converted yet. So you will not be able to use McAfee or Norton or Blackice or etc...

The improvements on 32bit apps are so minimal that the above problems will piss you off and you will revert back.

There are HUGE problems with drivers. Especially in high end very techinical systems like graphics cards that cost over $80... I am sure most of us spent more than that on our cards.

Almost all of the coolest games will not play in 64bit. Graphics drivers, lower level code and snippets of 16bits code that will not run.

There is absolutely no support for 16bit (win95) or 8bit (dos) programs. So you cannot use any of those programs at all.

In other words.. we are about 2 years away from moving there and you will actually feel shackled instead of released to move there now.

V_RocKs, I thought you could run both 32bit apps and 64bit apps on AMD's 64bit processors?
