I am a florida native, born and raised in fort lauderdale. I personally love living here. Lots of stuff to do, and if you want to get out of town- there are a lot of close getaways to choose from (the keys, south beach, tampa, orlando etc).
Weather is either hot or 'fuck it's humid'. We get a lot of wet heat, and it does take some getting used to, but for the right person it can be a delightful state to live in. Real estate has gone bizerk where i live but i hear their are still deals to be made futher upcoast.

I echo LauraLee's statement, I'm a FLL native as well and wouldnt want to live in any other state.
I keep moving north, ahead of the push (crowd) but in step with the commerce.
Central to north florida will probablly give you the best bang for your buck but SOFla is pretty fun. Depends if you want to party it up or settle down. Either way, it's all good.Comment

I was born and raised in Florida. South FL mostly. I love it there and miss it. Yes it rains, and yes there are hurricanes, but the water is warm, and everything is within 15 minutes in the Miami Ft Lauderdale area. You will get used to it fast, and the further south that you go in FL the cooler it is. You have the breeze from the ocean. It can get expensive to live in some areas, but far less than Cali. Having lived in San Diego for 4 years, LA for 8 years, and now Miami for 5 years. I can give you a pretty good run down
More humid than Cali, but you get used to it, and it's better for keeping your skin young. Also, the winters are better in South Florida than in SoCal.
Traffic is MUCH less than in Cali, even in Miami.... Although the quality of the drivers out here sucks compared to Cali
If you are into boats, etc... FLA is much better, the sea is much much warmer and calmer, and much cleaner, and there are ALL kinds of places to go by boat, Bimini and the bahamas, the keys, and lots of places on the water up and down the intercoastal.
Real estate is MUCH cheaper in Florida, compared to Cali, even though the fort lauderdale area is shooting up, it is still about 1/2 what it is in Cali, if you compare apples to apples.
Personally, I feel the following.
From West Palm beach south to Miami is the only area that is cosmopolitan, Tampa is ok, but the rest is pretty much like living in Georgia, as far as the culture is concerned. Personally, I find everything north of fort lauderdale a little too suburban and slow, but that is just me.
I would never live inland at all. Either on the beach, the intercoastal, or not too far off the intercoastal right on a big canal. Living on the water here is tropical paradise, living off the water is just flat, hot and buggy.

Seriously, if you're self-employed, it's great: cheap (by E/W coast standards), fun (the bars never close), excellent restaurants, historic (I live in a house that pre-dates the Civil War), and has a climate similar to most of Florida's.

Another California transplant to Florida. Weather sucks compared to California, cost of living is much better, lower housing costs and no state income tax. Much better scenery is California, except for the ocean and beaches which are nicer here. You want to be on the coast wherever you are, the closer the better.

I lived in Jacksonville for many years then moved into a very nice condo directly on the beach in Ponce Inlet, just south of Daytona. I loved it there. I also took weekend trips to Tampa and Ft Lauderdale a lot. As long as you are along the coastline somewhere, I would say anywhere is good. The great thing about Florida is that the Atlantic is sooo much warmer than the Pacific. I remember swimming in the ocean in mid December before and it was so nice.Comment

I live on the indian river intercoastal waterway (salt water) a few miles south of Ponce Inlet and a few miles north of Mosquito Lagoon. (and they don't call it Mosquito Lagoon for nothing)

I'm from Panama City originally and you can't beat the beaches in NW Fl but I can't live up there anymore. Too many rednecks and too much construction. I've been in Tampa for 8 years and it's just right. Not too big, but not so small that there's nothing to do.Comment

We lived in Florida (Tampa area) for five years. Didn't care for it.
Coming from the Northeast originally, we found it WAY too HOT.
88-92 degrees EVERY day in the summer (9 months of the year)
Afternoon thunderstorms - pretty fierce ones. (Heat lightning is neat though)
A lot of BUGS. Lovebug season twice a year. Yick! Palmetto bugs, HUGE and gross..
Housing prices were great while we were there - they have since gone up way too much.. Home prices and taxes have both skyrocketed in the area and it's being overdeveloped to death. Traffic is 10x worse just 7 years later to give you an idea.
If you like heat and bugs you'll never want to leave. 5 years was enough for us.All the best to youComment

Florida has no state income tax. Thats a plus
I know alot of people here are saying South Florida as the place to be, and I would agree if you like nightlife and being close in the action you have to be in South Florida. Tampa, West Palm and Jacksonville are much smaller and lack the amenities of Miami/Ft Lauderdale.
That said, the best concerts happen at the Sound Advice Amphitheater in West Palm. As one poster previously wrote, some of the best beaches are located in much smaller communities in the panhandle. You can find restaurants, shopping, good schools and quiet communities in every city including Miami. Miami can be both the most hectic rude city on one day and on the next you can find a spot with little traffic, beautiful locations and warm and friendly people.
No matter what the recommendations, if you tend to find fault with your current location, its been my experience you will also find fault with living in Florida.

I love living in Hollywood. I live close to downtown where there is always somehting going on and alot of outdoor cafes and bars
Im about 3 miles from the beach and they have a great beach walk with restaurants and bars with live music

Florida has so many different scenes...you can really get fucked picking the wrong town depending on your lifesyle.
South Florida is nice but fucking as expensive as most of Cali...if you don't have the bucks you won't enjoy it as much as you think by just visiting as a tourist. North Florida sucks everywhere and is just the same as Alabama or Georgia. Conservative nuts up the ying yang. Tampa Bay is the choice for blue-collar, get drunk and fuck for as cheap as possible type living. It will be like visiting Thailand as far as cost of living goes if you're moving from out west. Lot of mullets and wannabe pimps though. Orlando is cool if you're gay or like traffic...otherwise it's worthless.Comment
