    Ever used a print ad?

    Hey everyone-
I know everyone gets most if not all of their traffic from online sources, but I was wondering if anyone had tried print advertising in smaller, local papers or free magazines with sex or alternative listings...

I have a portal site I'm building up but I was thinking I might keep the idea in the back of my head if I can get my site larger.

    has anyone tried?

I'm also interested in this. Anyone ever put an ad in the likes of FHM?

A buddy of mine's site got an article written up in Maxim about a year ago. It was a fairly long article, not sure if it was the feature. It was a spring break site, I won't name it. He got some good traffic from it and sales, but it wasn't as much as you'd think. I don't have figures.

Sorry not much help in terms of quantifying this question.

So yes, in his case, print publicity drove traffic and sales to his site. His life did not change though

        yes i've tried.

        Hi there,

I ran ads local to me in Canada in popular trendy local magazines which had a small section of adult websites. I used a subdirectory to track how many clicks came from the magazine ad (of course this isn't accurate as people will just remember the name and click). For the price paid, the results were not even beyond 100 clicks over the months I maintained the link. This is from my experience promoting my membership based site. For portals and things of more long term use it may work.

I guess the best advice I dispense (and i'm sure our ecommerce failed businesses will agree) "never waste your money on advertising outside the internet, its just one extra step a customer has to do to logon - get them while there on and ready to buy". You can quote me on it ;)

        Hope this helps.

I think thats a really good point - I just thought it may be something a lot of webmasters either havent thought about or really investigated. It probably makes more sense for the really big guys - look at what vivid and jenna did. They had huge billboards in times square promoting both her website and her latest features - it both reminded customers who were aware of her and generated interest in those who had heard little about her. Jenna is such a branding queen.

however, her husband said they generate like 500 new signups a day on clubjenna (who knows if thats true) so I think they can afford ads.

            i agree.

Ya those guys have money all over thats for sure but us smaller guys dont

I am trying a new idea next month in the adult magazines selling my dvds and promoting my site like the mail order ads you may have seen if you at some point frequented those kinds of magazines If it makes any impact i'll let you know.

One of the most overlooked areas of marketing for both mainstream and adult businesses, is quality public relations!

I had a nice talk with Hank Heartland formerly with Mr. Skin, Hank was telling me that they lost count how many signups they had one morning after spending a little time with Howard Stern. A normal PR firm will get you on the air with a local morning zoo, a powerhouse shop will get you national exposure!

While I don't have any first hand knowledge about public relations company's dealing in the adult industry, but you might want to look at D-Money's company Marketingfirm.com.

I bookmarked the page long ago when I was first entering this racket, after some of the new 2257 regs blowover, and I can concentrate on getting a small stable of pay sites running, I was planning on using the Blatt brothers services in getting us the exposure you can't pay for!

              Something to seriously ponder...

I don't think it's good idea to promote sites for surfers offline. But I think it will work if you promote affiliate program or something like that.
