                            Invest in an F5 BIG IP 9.0 Load Balancer, and purchase some Sun V20z dual opteron machines to handle the search function.

                            With BIG IP you can point which applications to be processed by certain machines.

                                This is a good point, the existance of these sites also tell that there is a demand for it which isn't satisfied on a local level. The least, the remote searching should be brought in or built locally even though it's set apart from VB, hence less load on servers which run VB.

                                I'm sure that search.php and gfy database can be optimized even more as well. I'm involded in a search engine development, I know its a challenging job to perform fast searches through massive amounts of data without hitting CPU levels to 100%, it can be done with tweaking and optimization.
                                Good luck to gfy admins, if there are any.
