Note that I wasn't referring to principled opposition. However, when we experience something that evokes visceral hatred followed by knee jerk self-righteousness, its almost always because we've done it ourselves in the past.
The intensity of the reaction tends to blind us to our own faults in that area.
I had a female friend once who had that reaction to gossipers. She would express her utter contempt for gossipers by dissecting the personality faults, relationships, and probable repressed sexual procilivites of the people she accused of gossiping to me in our private conversations. It goes without saying that all of this occoured behind the accusee's backs. Not once did she suspect the extent of her hypocrisy, and the moment I pointed it out.. god.. I don't think I've seen a woman in that sort of sputtering rage since then. You'd think I'd taken up sides with beelzebub himself.
