The original question was - Does AVN have a credibility issue?
The answer is simple, yes, and it's been that way since I came on the scene in 97
Can it be changed?
I think a lot of us would tend to think only if they blow up the old orifice, bulldoze it away to start fresh.
Aly, I admire your attempts at remodeling and I REALLY admire them for hiring you to try and change things, but all I see are bandaids being placed trying to cover broken bones. Until the powers that be realize AVN doesn't have a focused product, gameplan OR audience and take tremendous action in that arena, I don't see any phoenix rising from the ashes.
Go undercover and ask around on a number of boards what AVN stands for, and what its purpose is. I think you'll see a wide variety of answers - some may be shocking. When it comes to business, imho its important to focus on one thing and do it well. Trying to be a little bit of everything waters down quality on all fronts.
I'll give a quick example of common webmaster perceptions - a group of us were in Vegas for the shows in January 2 years ago. There was a bet of $5k put forward by one in the group saying he could predict 80% or more of the award winners before they were announced. Guess how many of us took him up on the bet .. none. Were his predictions correct .. of course.
Lee said its just business .. Lee there are good ways of doing business and there are not so good ways. It all comes down to a few simple things. Define what your product IS, define your target audiences' wants/needs, and define how you can present your product in good light to them so it'll attract more end-users.
As for the show in Miami, advertise on ceilings, floors, windows, napkins, spritz bottles, columns, elevators, escalators, restrooms (inside AND outside!) and even on toilet paper! Cmon now, when is enough dollar bleeding considered deadly?
If AVN wants to be known for Greed, then by all means they've succeeded and I offer cudos. If not, there is a serious battle to fight.
Sorry if this comes off as harsh but I tend to call em as I see em.

I'm no professional writer, THIS WE KNOW - but I'm going to work with both AVN Online and AVN Magazine and have their editorial staff help me get my thoughts down on various aspects of the Content business. There are 20 topics i can rattle off the top of my head regarding different points of interest that I think will help BOTH webmasters and the guys in the video business and add value to both magazines.
These won't be advatorial pieces for ContentBlowout.com or TheContentStore.com, but I'm sure they'll get exposure from writing articles month after month. Just got to keep my name out there consistantly!

In that conversation in which J Styles told me 10 different things he had going on, which content producers he had just met with , how many volumes of titles he had collected, who he was calling next and how much money he was making etc...
One little caveat was that he would be writing a column for AVN and AVN Online as a platform to promote his own company. I skoffed at it, but it was a trivial part of the conversation. I laughed because my dear friend Houston was a columnist as well and she phoned in her article to Heidi every month ( she didn't want or need to extra publicity that much) I too had been asked by Farley to write a column for AVN- only after they saw how well I wrote an article for XBIZ. I told him they'd have to pay me a lot of money to do it- That was the end of the conversation.
Funny thing is all the time D was in good graces with AVN- sitting at the owners' table for the awards shows, and receiving referrals from them - do you think they gave a fuck about me?

Did they want to give me articles and coverage?
NO.
I was the "asshole" brother to them. The irony here is that when I brokered the sale of YNOT- AVN was the first company I approached about buying it. I recall Darren Roberts and Paul saying " Why do we need it? why do we need webmasters?"
I wonder how different the attitudes would be from webmasters now if they would have decided to get more engratiated with the webmaster community by acquiring YNOT back in 2000.
I believe in my opinion their business model is to "take, take, take"- and not give, give, give
