Sorry, but that statement is WRONG. I used to be a reserve deputy sherriff with the maricopa county sherriff's office. They did EXACTLY what they were supposed to do. One is NOT expected to die while doing your job just to protect an idiot that wants to harm/kill you.

As for the baton, he can easily get close enough to get you with the knife if you try to use the baton. Are YOU going to take that chance? I wouldn't.

Also, the problen with the shot to the leg theory, is that unless you hit him in the bone (a target about an inch and a half across), he isn't going to stop. When he is six feet away, it takes about one second for him to get to you with that knife; he is lunging towards you, and if you miss the bone in his leg, (easy to miss), he will get to you with the knife. Again, are you dumb enough to take that chance?

If the answer is yes... good luck surviving your first year as a police officer.

Shooting a moving target in the leg only happens in the movies. It's simply too difficult a shot to pull off when your life is in danger.
