With mass volume buying comes peaked interest which in turn means people buy driving up the price but the guy (whale) with the big buy when low sells after everyone buys (price is now higher) and makes his cash. selling all of his stock in turn makes people think something is happening so everyone sells and drives the price back down. he already made his money.

rinse and repeat as needed. takes a ton of cash to do so though.
