    Bill Gates busts on Apple

    FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Microsoft founder Bill Gates sees mobile phones overtaking MP3s as the top choice of portable music players, and views the raging popularity of Apple's iPod player as unsustainable, he told a German newspaper.

    "As good as Apple may be, I don't believe the success of the iPod is sustainable in the long run," he said in an interview published in Thursday's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

    "You can make parallels with computers: Apple was very strong in this field before, with its Macintosh and its graphics user interface -- like the iPod today -- and then lost its position," Gates said.

      inevitably the largest mp3 toting phones/handhelds will do a cobrand with the ipod and that will be the kicker.

          I sold my apple shares in the low 40s.. I share the same views Gates has, but I'm sure Apple already plans to come up with an iPod phone of their own. For investors, Apple's big run up is over for now, that's for sure. But I am going to get a Mac sometime next week, finally. We'll see a lot more from Apple in the next few years. Good stuff

                          Bill Gates is absolutely 100% right on this one. And Apple agrees with him as they are working with Motorola in developing an iPod phone.

                              If apple want to keep their leading share of mp3 players in todays market, they will need to combine their hardware with a phone [as has been stated before] however current available technology prevents this from happening as battery life is just one of the many issues that plague todays' technology.

                              People simply don't want a phone that only lasts 9 hours if you have an mp3 player on it. New storage capacity for re-chargable energy needs to be created and implimented before such a 'break-through' can happen.

                              I believe that phone-ipods are rather pointless however, as most phones have the capcity to hold large flash cards [up to 2-4gb] and lets be honest here, how many people can say they have 60gb of Mp3's on their PC/Mac?

                                  Gates, or I should say Micro$oft owns like 50% (or a majority) of Apple anyways. What's Gates care?
