WOW.....some insightful posts....I figured this thread would get some laughs, but I really didn't expect it to kick off a real Q & A on Unions. I said that I was not going to get all political in this thread but maybe I will give you a little insight into my, PERSONAL, thoughts on this issue.
But first....let me say something directly to SexToyKing.....Todd, you know I love you like a brotha but you and I *might* disagree just a little bit on this issue. You know it is nothing personal
Now....a thumbnail sketch of my take on Organized Labor Unions....
There was a time in American History, especially in the Northern and New England States, where Americans were forced to work 18 hour days in the Steel Mines, et al, in unsafe conditions, with unsafe tools, without the aid of protective clothing, respirators, or even complete gloves. They did this for wages that equated to poverty at best just so they could put food on the table of their family, most of whom immigrated from another country with little more than the clothes on their backs trying to make a new life in the United States of America.
At some point, these men realized that companies are built from the bottom up and not the top down and began to organize. The organizations became what we now refer to as unions and they were welcomed with open arms. They fought the good fight. They got unscrupulous employers to improve working conditions, safety, environmentals and finally salaries. There was much rejoicing in the workforce and people were happy to give a small part of their salary in order to have a well spoken voice speaking on their behalf.
Now, switch to today....
EEOC, OSHA, DOL, ADA...the list goes on and on. These are government agencies and actions insure that NO employer can make anyone work in unsafe, unsanitary, or unhealthy conditions without being brought up on severe charges that range from civil (hefty fines) to criminal (jail time).
Now where does that leave the Unions? The only "tyrranical" thing that they can preach on is salary and that is becoming less and less of an issue as competition for good employees is more fierce than ever. They have steadily raised their dues to their members and have less and less to show for it. This has caused many unions to disband or become a shadow of what they once were.
Unions today remind me of dinosaurs near extinction. They have outlived their useful life and will be replaced by smaller, smarter, faster animals that will grow and prosper. It doesn't mean they served no purpose because they did...and it was a good and just cause....but, again....IMHO....they have outlived their useful life and should be talked about in the History Books and not in the Corporate World of today.
WOW....my fingers are tired....if you read that I will be shocked....but I will disclaim it again by saying that these are MY PERSONAL thoughts and do not necessarily represent the opinions of NationalNet or this TV Station. I welcome and cherish your thoughts and opions.

T,
Much love also
Your summary is pretty right on except you forgot to mention the parts where the corp's and especially the republican party have chizzled away for years at our labor laws and union system as a whole. There is good and bad in organised labor but I belive the protections out way the bad. I have never and will never cross a picket line. Alot of people mostly bitch about unions because of donations to the dems, i.e. Aflcio, Teamsters, etc - dues taken out of paychecks, etc.
I just feel we don't want too loose 1 more chip in the pile for workers.

Wow, great post, SweetT. I see the bigger picture now, and I must say I agree with you on most points. When my mother worked at Finning in the IT department, the heavy machine workers kept trying to get her to join their union, since the shop was in the next building. All the IT people were quite confused about that, and just said, "uhh no?" The union kept trying, though.email: [email protected]Comment

so very true, people are lazy and want everything given to them, they want to become rich without putting in the work, moral and economic philosophers have discussed it more years, like Ayn Rand for example.Originally posted by SlyThe American Dream still exists. People forget that the only person that can make the American Dream happen is themselves. They would rather sit around and bitch about some invisible person "holding them back".no sigComment
