There is an irony there

The truth is the "masses" do not give a shit unless something is "popularized" by a touch of "sensationalism", "dramatisation" - call it what you will.
There is even less interest in anything "slimy" - all the masses want to see are nice furry creatures - preferably cute with human characteristics they can identify with. The limit that tourist voyeurism goes is seeing the monkeys and parrotts. Their concept of anything environmental is limited to picking up the plastic cup in the local park.
Steve brought the "slimies" out to play and dramatised them for the masses - and did it well - hence all these GFY threads and international attention.
He also did a lot more - but of course - that matters little to the masses
