We're all just lucky that war simply didn't break out between Russia and the West at that point whatever else Patton may have felt about it.
With hindsight Patton was right...we should have engaged the Soviets.

FYI...the number of Divisions is not necessarily important. The size of the Division is important (not all militaries have the same number of warm bodies in a Division). The types of Divisions are important...Infantry...Armor...Artillary. The type of armanent in a Division are important (not all militaries arm their Divisions the same).

FYI the US and Great Britain alone...from 1940 to 1945 had more than 60 million (22 million Great Britain...38 million USA) men in uniform compared to the Soviets 48,000,000...so I would say that the Soviets had more than a little assist.

Did you ever get to watch the acclaimed award-winning series "The world at war"? It was a multi-installment ongoing series of one-hour episodes from back in the 70's based on actual war footage and interviews with vets, survivors and from official records of the WWII era. I watched every episode, and the subsequent reruns over and over.

Back in my early teens I was fascinated with the subject actually.

Believe me, if I thought for a second you were right, I would say so. But from what I know of it, there was a time when the Russian army had vanished into the east and was looking to regroup. It is of that time that I speak, and it is of that time that they needed (and recieved) a good portion of the help you say they didn't need. Sorry, but on this you are flat-out wrong.

Other than that you are right, their accomplishment was incredible. I don't particularly like what they chose to do after the war, annexing countries and putting up walls and the like, but to try and suggest that they were some golden force that liberated the universe is ludicrous at best.

The Germans lost approximately 300 tanks during the Battle of Kursk...this from 2700 tanks at their disposal...and this from the more than 46 thousand tanks Germany produced from 1940-1945. BTW...the Soviets lost approximately the same number of tanks. So...no the Panzer Divisions were not..."permanently burned out".

CDSmith, no offense dude, but you can't have a firm understanding of WWII because you watched a couple documentaries. That's like people who watch CNN a couple hours a night thinking that they understand politics.

Organizational strength of Panzer divisions TO&E changed from a high of ~300 AFVs (1940) to 125 AFVs (1944). Paper strength of 1945 Panzer divisions was 25 AFV.

From 1940-44 German monthly AFV production hovered in the 50 machines areans.

The Krauts were totally boar hogged by '43-44.

Actually Ike let the USSR be aprt of a german surrender because we were stilla t war with Japan and he had hoped that by us letting the USSR be a part of the surrender they would help us with Japan.

USSR would win in this war anyways with or without help from US, it was only matter of another few K of dead people and we all know it wasn't a prob for Stalin.
Though, for some reason, i'm sure that US people would start to help USSR 2 years before they did it, but US gov decided it only in 1944

the point of my question is that Russia suffered massive losses and it was not so simple as you are trying to make it out to be. russia was nothing more than a military dinosaur when they were invaded with calvery vs tanks. with outdated artillery vs. the best in the world... with no airforce vs the best airforce in the world. russias achievement was that they turned their own situation around astoundingly fast and got great results.... but not before mounting massive losses.

dont forget the role that winter played in all this.

with or without help they would have won either way because Stalin was more than willing to produce 1 unarmed teenage soldier to be thrown help helplessly at every bullet the Germans produced. it was just a numbers game.

The majority of Soviet losses were civilians...but the Soviet military did lose something like 13 plus million compared to the USA's less than 300 thousand.

I left off the part where Hitler absolutely refused the advice of his General/Generals as he was prone to do...which enraged the CG of Operation Zitadelle.

ROFL ! Where are pulling your facts from ?

                                                Battle of Kursk:
                                                German forces - 570,000
                                                Russian Forces ~ 1 million.

Fight for Kursk involved the largest tank battle in history, a total of 6,000 tanks, and the German loss of approximately 3,000.
The Germans army impaled themselves on Russian defenses 165 kilometres deep.

The German attack lasted for four days before stiff resistance stopped it. The Russians counterattacked and began to reverse the German gains.

and after Kusrk followed Bagration, where the Russians ripped through 40 German divisions in 40 days or whatever, and then just stopped outside Warsaw. So it was quite a change in momentum.

It was the result of a concerted effort by many nations.... the reasons for those nations involvement is varied... but primarily for self preservation against what was an obviously aggressive and powerful force that would eventually attempt to overthrow all nations if drastic measures of resistance weren't made.

There were significant battles in N. Africa..... no Russians involved in beating Rommel there.

Battle of the bulge...... western front, no Russian influence there.

                                                              Battle for Sicily.... no Ruskies.

Invasion of Italy...... zero Russian participation.

You talk as though you have all the answers DJ.... I'll give you that much. And again, I'm not trying to diminish in any way the incredible accomplishment of the Russian forces..... but without the combined allied naval forces fighting the nazi subs and warships, without our air force fighting the luftwaffe, keeping their Afrika corps at bay, etc etc..... there is no way Russia or any other single country could have defeated the germans.

Sorry, your accounting is full of holes.

I brought that series up not to support my own position so much as because in several episodes it went into great detail on the Russian front, the retreat, the defeats, the "scorched earth" policy... the siege of Leningrad, and how the Russian forces were able to regroup themselves. You would have had to see that series to know what great detail they went into. It was no mere "documentary", and I'm surprised you weren't glued to the TV back then watching it as well. It was about as far from CNN as it gets.

They could have invaded Germany while the Nazi army was busy in Poland. But instead the British army sat in France with their thumbs up their ass. It's pretty trendy on the other side of the pond to blame America for getting into the war too late... But do ya'll remember Chamberlain's "Peace in our time" Bullshit and the big swim from Dunkirk

In Europe, the Nazi threat is all but gone as the "Big 3" nations begin to tackle the problem of restructuring the shattered continent. In the Pacific, the situation in Okinawa has turned into a bloody stalemate between the Americans and Japanese. Meanwhile, significant progress is being made in overcoming the enemy in the Philippines. The US also continues to soften the enemy's defenses on mainland Japan. In the US, shocking evidence of a Japanese/German bombmaking alliance ends up on the shores of New Hampshire--a timely and valuable discovery for the United States government and its atomic bomb project. Join us for another gripping hour of our series that takes a week-by-week look at the end of World War Two.

Americans suffer terrible losses on Okinawa as they continue their advance. It's the last stepping stone on the way to mainland Japan. The Pacific island's capture is deemed absolutely vital by the Allied High Command. The region is hit by torrential rain and the battlefield becomes a quagmire. Meanwhile, US bombers continue to pound mainland Japan. Submarines have isolated the country from the outside world. In the Philippines, Japanese troops are now desperately trying to hold the Wawa Dam on the Marikina River, following the successful US assault on the Ipo Dam on Luzon a few days earlier. In Europe, several high-ranking Nazi officials are arrested, including Heinrich Himmler, one of Hitler's most notorious and brutal henchmen. Soon after, Himmler commits suicide. Join us for a week-by-week account of activities in both theaters of war as the Second World War nears its end in Europe and continues to rage across the Pacific.

Fighting on Okinawa intensifies as the Japanese begin their retreat. Enemy forces on the island of Borneo send hundreds of Australian and British soldiers on a death march across the island, while US forces continue to wipe out scattered opposition on the Philippines. In Europe, British troops oversee the transfer of thousands of Nazi sympathizers from Russia to Yugoslavia. And the continent's food shortage is now a top priority in Washington. In this episode of our week-by-week overview of the closing months of WWII, we'll profile US General Simon Bolivar Buckner and highlight the P-51 Mustang escort fighter.

I don't know exactly how many, but it was a lot, like 20 or 30 at least. It covered WWII from beginning to end in great detail, won several awards. Was one of my fav shows as a kid.

and the catholic church has killed 680 million people (not to mention all the peodofilia)! Funnily enough people seem to dislike communism more for some reason.

Russia did well in the war, and if it weren't for them the war would either have ended by Germany winning, or the war actually taking 5 years longer.

It is funny how Americans always expect forever lasting gratitude from Europeans for saving us from the nazis, but they can't for example say a good thing for the French that helped them gain their indipendence...

I believe Stalin once said: The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic.

That should give you a little bit of insight in how much Stalin cared about his own people. Not that I could give a fuck, I'm just saying.

Communism didn't kill the Russians, Stalin did. The Soviet death toll would have been considerably lower if the men doing the fighting fought under the same circumstances and guidance the Western Allies did. If you were a Russian in WW2, you probably had German guns pointing at you in on direction, and your commanding officers gun pointing at your head in the other. (At least that's how it works in the WW2 video games I play, and by juding from some posts in this thread so of you consider WW2 shooters a history lesson)

Japan was responsible for the deaths of at least 15 million innocent people during WW2. Why don't you ever hear about those deaths? Because the ethnic Chinese don't run Hollywood. (Just kidding, but not really)

You don't hear people crying about how "EMPIRES KILLED 15 MILLION PEOPLE" How many people died during the Vietnam war? You don't hear people saying "DEMOCRACY KILLED ALL THOSE VIETNAMESE".

Why? Because people kill people, political ideologies just give those in power the means to do so.

Just look at Canada. They've been communists since the Tommy Douglas days, but the only thing they're guilty of killing are baby seals.
