What are your thoughts on this?

This is a real situation...The names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty.

AcmePorno Productions contacts another producer and the conversation goes somewhat like this:

Acme: How would you like to shoot for (insert big name adult company here)?

Other Producer: That's cool. What do you have in mind?

Acme: We want (insert very specialized niche content with difficult circumstances) and we would like you to produce multiple sets a month for (insert insultingly low price). Isn't that a great offer! And you will be shooting for (big company)!

Now.......The price offered is roughly what it would cost to produce this....NOT including location, misc. costs, or even...dare I suggest it....Profit.

Ah...I will also mention that "Acme" does not have the best reputation in the business. I have seen and heard of multiple problems with them.

So, here's my question. Knowing that Acme is outsourcing this...Most likely without telling their client...and probably keeping 50% of what (big company) is really offering.....Would you consider going around Acme and dealing directly with the other company....Maybe even at a lower total cost to that company?

To me, this seems unprofessional but so does Acme trying to sell me on shooting for a "big company" that I already have ties with. Now, If Acme were not so greedy then I would probably work through them....But not when I could potentially take a loss.

      A. If you want/need the exposure (which I doubt) go with the deal. Sometimes you have to take a loss and look at potential future earnings.

      B. If you want the exposure but don't want the potential loss. Ask for more coin...but maybe not full price.

      C. If you could care less about "production company" go with your ties to "big adult name"...

      I'd go with "B" personally...

Well, depending on how strong your "ties" are, I would say you pretty much answered your own question. In fact, you may want to be a little proactive and do exactly what you suggested and go around them (not even necessarily to get the work) and let them know that they are relying on the unreliable

If the "ties" are not that strong, tell the fucks that your are insulted that they would even suggest that you work so cheaply given the caliber of your end product and given your reputation in the industry

it would be a tad unprofessional to go around them, maybe tell them that they need to increase the pay because this simply isn't profitable.

If the company that is outsourcing to you has had really bad things like you said , it might be justifiable (sp?) to go around them though. In order for you not to get burned.

You need to ask them to pick up your expenses (with reciepts) then agree on a profit above that (20%? - I dont know, but you would), and make it clear to them that you would get a better deal going around them (not saying you should).

Honestly, please tell them to their face exactly what on your mind. Anything you think of and want to say should be said. Don't hold back your feelings! Have more balls.. or is it not about having balls to speak up for yourself? I mean.. you already have ties with the other company why do you care?

if the other producer is friends or has done prior biz with acme, the other producer should ask for what he feels he should be paid.

if other producer doesnt get what he feels is adequate compensation, or isnt friends or has done business with acme before, the other producer should go straight to the big company and pitch.

i say you should go directly to the top of the of the mesa and when the coyote gets close enough you should drop the anvil on his head from 500 feet up.

lol. go direct. if someone has the op and privelege to do something with someone who already has a rep with another biz, then they should be generous and eloquent in their offers. you never know what types of relationships are already in place with the two. if its such an important huge thing, then it should be worth more to execute. basically, it sounds like acme inserted thmselves as a middleman to some benefit of their own.

Although the line "Acme does not have the best reputation in the business..." suggests to us that Other Producer IS predisposed to cutting them out, we don't know what Other Producer's relationship is with Acme. Acme and the other producer have no other affiliation, as far as I know.

Basically, I started this thread to get feedback for the other producer.

IMHO, Acme has proven time and time again that they are not to be trusted. It baffles me as to why (big company) would even consider doing business with them.....But then again....We all make mistakes from time to time.

                                  Hard to say.

Burning the bridge by going around them isnt always a good idea, but as you said, it might not be a bridge you need to keep.

As for working with a "big name program".... so what? Small programs pay green money also and isnt that what its all about anyways? I say go around them if you want the job. Never cut your rates just to have a plaque to hang on your wall.
