I have been here 5 years and okay, the informative threads weren't quite as badly outnumbered in the past. Still there seem to be a lot of people wearing rose-colored glasses around. Post 1998, most board drama was every bit as pathetic as now, except it was coming from contemporaries of those who say the newcomers are not as entertaining.
I think people forget that webmaster boards went into decline years ago precisely because the vast majority lurked and only a handful were willing to contribute anything. Most of the well-known names either dropped off or began their own boards. Newbie questions kept pulling the same stock answers, but how many times can you repeat the same advice before it gets old? So more people dropped away.
Which is where sigs came in, as an incentive to prop up flagging visitor numbers.
As embarassing as it is to have GFY as the industry's biggest board, its visitor numbers prove that appealing to the lowest common denominator works. And since that keeps up the advertising revenue, I guess it's just tough for anyone who doesn't like it.
