People pray because they are too apathetic to actually do anything about solving their problem(s), so ask their imaginary friend to do it for them. This way they distance themselves from having any resposibility when it goes bad, and just say "Oh well, it was God's will".

Pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one.
People usually become religious when they are in the worst point of their life. Alcoholics, drug addicts, bankrupt, poor, convicts, sick, etc. They can't handle the fact that it is themselves that is fucking their lives up, so they "find God" and pass the buck.
The act itself is at least therapeutic and may have foundations in science. The power of belief or faith has been known to heal at least. The placebo effect. Not just prayer of course, but it's still interesting in that respect. Similiar to Yoga or Meditation. Whatever works?
If you like to pray, I don't think it's my right to call you weak or lazy or stupid. Especially, if you aren't trying to force me to do the same.

God has a prime directive!
Actually I pray to the life force that guides me through my journey to show me the path of least suffering to learn the lessons I need to gain the wisdom needed to reach a higher state. Correctly said there is a placaebo effect that makes your mind shape your destiny. And in the words of Anthony Robbins, "If you ask the right questions, the mind, the magnificent thing that it is will come up with solutions all by itself and guide you" (para-phrased)

OK so maybe you don't believe in a magic man in the sky that can admonish you of your sins and give you what you want for X-mas...buy you cannot deny that life is a very very complex mathmatical algorithm that plots the action-reaction the creates the rules of physics. So complicated that it is in a sense, self aware. If you harness this energy and use if to come up with solutions for your life you will gain understanding and a "feel" for this complicated function getting the things you want and gaining the valuable knowledge you need. Praying is only putting into human terms the "asking the right questions", so your brain can use it's understanding of the universal algorithm to point you in the right direction.

you are praying to the wrong dude.
I pray to the dollar.
then when I wakeup in the morning I check stats and there is more money, so I pray to the dollar some more, and then the next morning there is more money.
see it really works.

Jesus?s neck got broke by Mohammed when he missed a punch and fell down on a chair that had been misplaced in the boxing match just moments earlier. They made a movie about it called Million Dollar Savior.
It really depends on how you define "god" and what you pray for.
To ask God to serve your will ("help me win this football game") is pretty silly. But to pray to become more in line with the flow of the universe/god's will/love seems like a good way to focus energy.
All I do is thank god every night for all the people in my life, my business and the gifts he has given me. I ask for nothing, he is god not Santa Claus

For guidance on important crossroads in my life. For gratitude on every blessing He has sent our way. For the skills He blessed us with... basically anything that's on my mind.
Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean you need to ridicule it.
You can pray as much as you want to if it makes you feel good. That's fine. I don't do it because I don't believe in God (or in anything spiritual for that matter), so I don't see any sense to it. To me it seems like a waste of time.
As long as you leave me alone with it, you can do your praying. Shit, it's your life.
I won't be able to convince anyone of atheism anyway. It's a matter of blind belief, and against that all reason is powerless.
if there is a God he doesn't need praying to and isn't concerned with what we are doing. Only a Diety with emotional issues would need people to pray to him/her.
I am lazy and i pray two times every day.God is alive but he cannot interfere beacuse then anyone will want everything and then big anarchy will become.Maybe world situatiion looks shity but atleast is not total chaos.
I consider myself an agnostic... I think it's a bit arrogant to assume that we have explained every mystery of the universe already... You can't just write off the notion of a higher power so easily...... I'm not talking about an organized religion and the bible and stuff but it would kinda suck if this was all there was.

A Jew (friend of mine) once told me, "God doesn't let anything happen
to you, that you can not handle".
I have repeatedly thought about this statement. As i am not high on
religion, I do like some of those wisdoms that come from it.
Like the one about Job, a highly repectable man of his time. The Devil
challenged God, "I can get him to curse the name of God" and in
God's reply to the devil, I will allow you to do anything you wish and I
know he will never curse my name.
So the devil unleashed all sorts of evil upon the man Job and in his
unrelenting style continually prayed to God for mercy and eventually
stated to all his followers, "God giveth and God taketh away" rejoice
in his love for us and be thankful for what you have had and lost.
Even Jesus faultered in his last moments of Life, questioning his own
fathers wisdom, "Father why have you forsaken me?" At which moment
God opened up the sky and said, "it is time". Time for the son to return
to the father. As Jesus was at that time, we are human and we will have
our doubts, yet do not let this cloud your better judgement.
We live, we die!
Without evil we will not know good. What we perceive as Real is only
a portal into the rest of your life eternal. So we would hope to believe.
