Smart Thumbs is a piece of cake to run, even if it has gotten more advanced options lately. Regardless, it still offers quite a bit less flexibility in updates and display than Comus does. However, it's a kick-ass script when it comes to speed, making efficient use of server resources and getting your best thumbs up on top.
If anyone would ask me whether to pick one over the other, my answer would be another question: How do you want to run your site? If you want to take submissions, do daily updates and schedule them for a long time ahead, then Comus is for you. If you want to rotate FHG's mainly, without much regard to submitted galleries, and you want it done with as little work as possible, then Smart Thumbs is a much better choice.
As I said, they're both GREAT scripts, you just need to know which to choose, depending on your particular intention in terms of how to run your site.

Thanks, now we know what to fix in ST to make it best of both worlds :-)
