You are crazy in today's crime infested society not to have a big ass dog in your house. I had 3 German Shepherds at one point, with the biggest of them full on attack trained.
When we built a huge house in California, within 2 weeks after moving in someone tried to burglarize us. And the keyword is tried. They pried open one of the back doors and when they reached in to yank the chain, my big dog must have jumped up and totally gone to town on the guys arm. We came home and found blood on the door and pieces of his shirt torn off on the floor. And the funny thing is that door had a sign on it that said "Police K-9 Trained Attack Dogs Protect This House!" Guess he thought we were joking. hahahahahahahahaha
