thats one of the reasons i was hesitant, but luckly Ubuntu has a feature that lets you check out the OS by booting to the CD you burn the ISO to, and you can play with it like it was actually installed, they got FireFox, GAIM, and GIMP (linux version of photoshop) pre-installed on the system, and GIMP looks like it can do what i need photoshop for, so im good to goOriginally posted by xanxis there a version of photoshop for linux? thats the main reason I don't switch

No you have to run it under Wine. Wine will let you run about 4,500 windows apps using the Windows API on top of Unix.Originally posted by xanxis there a version of photoshop for linux? thats the main reason I don't switch

I really think Microsoft has a lot to worry about in the future. Open Source is doing a full on assault.
Also, if anyone wants a free office suite like MS Office.
Open Office 2.03 is fantastic and FREE!

Dude GIMP has been rocking for years... I know a few designers who have been using it exclusively for 8-9 years. Personally I have been running Linux on my desktop for 8 years and have not really had a problem with missing software, other than the latest games, which I can really do without.Originally posted by xanxis there a version of photoshop for linux? thats the main reason I don't switchComment

Suse has always been behind the game IMO. They have a big corporate presence, especially in Europe, but as far as software goes, they started as a revamped version of Redhat before Redhat really took off in terms of development. Now if you want a Redhat-based distribution, Fedora is the way to go, and buying/downloading Suse will leave you with an inferior product.Originally posted by KRLWhat do you think about Suse 10.1? Any modern Linux installer (ie. Fedora or Ubuntu) will have all those drivers in the box... Hell, they've had them for years. I installed a recent Ubuntu on my laptop 2 years ago, and it picked up the graphics card (which XP still doesn't and requires a CD), the wireless controller, the Winmodem, and a ton of other shit which has been historically a pain in the ass.Originally posted by S P A N N O WKRL, what about drivers for video cards, sound cards and hardware - got a handy link to utilities that address those (I'm right on the verge of switching myself)?Comment

yeah yeah a friend of a friend of friend hear Gimp was cool....
Dude Gimp sucks, it's to do basic stuff. Nothing can replace a PS.
Can you dev some Flash on linux? I mean real flash solution? I'd miss many softwares.
Linux is fine if you just do desktop stuff like word, mail, internet browsing. and of course servers.-------------------------------

Good for you! I've been wanting to switch for ages now too, but i haven't had the balls to go through with it, because i know i'd have to spend ages tweaking it all again, not to mention that in University, they'll be using XP, so i can't be arsed switching around between the two.Comment

Ive used Linux every now and then since the original redhat 5.2,
and i have to say that XP is still best. If you secure it properly.
Windows is simply faster, smoother and the resolutions are better.
It all depends on what you do though, but if you use stuff like dreamweaver, photoshop and other things, then windows is definitly best for you.. Only when you're a programmer, linux might be interesting.Comment

I know.. you also have software like CrossOver Office that allow you to use windows software in Linux.. but it all just doesn't work as good and smooth as in Windows.Originally posted by LOL :Di use dreamweaver and photoshop, but i found other things that can take their place in linux
It's fun to use though, but imo that's it. I bet you will get bored and tired of the limitations in like a month and you will be reinstalling XP again.Comment

Til Adobe support Linux, I'll stick with Windows or OSX thanks
Plus...
did you know that most bluescreens... MOST... ALMOST all in fact, are NOT Windows errors, but applications that are running under Windows. Of course, most people blame Microsoft, but that simply isn't the case.

Well, tradition for most Linux vendors and the OSS community in general is to fix security holes as soon as they are found. This usually means you see updates roll out quite often. In contrast, microsoft lets their security fixes wait till their next scheduled update. I think they are finally getting better about this, but they havnt regained my trust yet. I used to work for Red Hat so I might be biased;)Originally posted by tahitiI forgot also: be prepared to make security updates more often than on XP, linux is insecure . I dont know the procedures that ubuntu sets up by default to keep your system updated, but it is based on debian, wich has the apt-get system for managing installs and updates. Keeping your system updated is as simple as running one command (sudo apt-get -u upgradel, i beleive).. and if they are smart, it does this in the background once or twice a day. Can anyone confirm that?
Fedora and Red Hat both come out of the box by default with up2date (yum for fedora) scheduled to check for security updates etc, and install the quietly in the background while you use your computer so you dont have to ever think about it.ICQ: 284903372Comment

If you're still experimenting and getting used to it, you should also take a look at Mandriva. http://www.mandriva.com/en/download
You can get a "live" version as well as full installs there. Very easy installation and 90% of what you need to do webmaster work is already there. Also extremely easy to install and update with their RPM system, just like running windows update.Comment
