Does Congress Really Want To Protect Our Children? Do You?

In doing the documentary on the plastic surgery of Summer Haze I have been confronted with some facts that both startle and disturb me. Since liposuction is one of the most common forms of plastic surgery I started looking at the cause.

Obviously the cause is being overweight, but why?

You are probably thinking South are you joking? You have to ask? the cause is poor nutrition and not enough exercise.

For the most part you are correct. But what is it that has brought about thisw poor nutrition and lack of excersize.

In my studying this I have discovered that childhood obesity in the United States now sits at near 15 %. That is obesity people...not overweight but grossly overweight enough so to cause drastic health problems.

Did you know that an obese child will lose 17 to 27 years off of his/her life? That doesn't count smoking and other contributing factors...just the obesity.

Thirty years ago type 2 diabetes in children was virtually non existant, now it has increased to alarming rates and at a proportion that is directly associated with weight increases in children as a whole.

Other previously non existant problems are showing up as well, fatty liver disease for instance.

Yet in all the attention that is being tossed at protecting children from sex on TV and on the internet, virtually no one is giving this problem anything more than a little lip service.

For at least two generations now children have grown up thinking of fast food as a "treat", they spend time with video games instead of outdoors playing, diet and exercise has given way to convenience and laziness, and as a result our children are becoming obese and dying.

I have news for you, and for our president and congress. People making adult movies by and for adults are not harming your children, we want you to monitor them and keep them away from our product we want your children to grow up happy, healthy and well adjusted. We aren't doing them anywhere NEAR the harm that you are.

Stop gorging them with empty calories, get them outside to play and if our legislature wants to look for child abuse, they need look no further than the continuous procession of advertising of fast food that targets our children all day long.

Wake up people McDonalds and television are babysitting your kids.

Are you going to take responsibility or just ignore it and hope it will go away? Maybe you will change your mind when you attend your childs funeral...

    Hey it motivated John Walsh.

Interesting, however I hesitate to have parents place too much importance on weight. You would not believe the number of younger children that are obsessed with it. 10 year old of normal weight should NOT be thinking about diets, the problem is, they are

maybe not weight but proper nutrition, eating whole foods, etc.

You are right on the money.

                        The problems start early.

Many school districts around the country have eliminated physical education programs and also sell vending space to the junk food companies.

If you look at the prices that Coke/Pepsi will pay for exclusive rights in a school district you will see that they know that if they get the kids hooked on their brand they will stay loyal customers for life.

It should already be very obvious that they are not trying to protect the children. If they were trying to do that they would do something about what was mentioned in the first post. It never has been about the children. That's just bullshit they throw around to get more people to support them. Nothing more..

Fantastic editorial. Very well put, terrific point made. Too bad the fast food industry gives so much money to our politicians that this will never even be debated. Easier to pretend you care about kids and sasified the religious kooks by going after adult entertainment and bad words on TV. As if a kid ever got diabetes by hearing the word fuck.

No one is talking about diets for children. Healthy eating and exercise for their children should be the most important thing on a parent's mind. The fast food we buy our kids because we're lazy and they're (naturally) ignorant is basically poison.

                                  sigh

See, when you have at best an 8th grade education, it's hard to read a page of text. Most adults, on the other hand, are more than happy to read. Some people even read whole newspapers, books, and magazines, every day. I know, to you this sounds amazing, but it's true.

I know for simple folks like yourself it's hard to imagine anyone reading more than the Fox news ticker, but, news flash, the entire country is not illiterate like you yet. I realise it's hard for your little brain to comprehend, but for most of us, that one page editorial that Mike posted will be far from the longest thing we read today. And since he makes a very good point, it's well worth the read.

Of course, since you've already addmitted you can't read more than one line of text at a time, I don't know what the fuck I'm doing responding to you with three paragraphs. I'm sure if you try to read this response you'll fall asleep or start crying and turn on the TV before you're able to finish it.

Anyway, I have something that may be able to help you:
