Damn silly topic... whether you like their music or not, The Beatles were pivotal in the development of today's music recording and performing industries. I doubt you could over-rate them.
You might argue that the time was right and lots of other factors were involved, but once Decca signed The Rolling Stones to allow them to compete with EMI (who had signed The Beatles), the music business exploded on both sides of the Atlantic as everyone started playing catch-up.
It isn't just the music itself they influenced. If bands hadn't progressed beyond clubs and 1,000-seat theaters, we would never have seen the huge shows that playing in stadiums made affordable. The money the 60's bands generated made "pop" respectable and changed the face of radio and (to a lesser extent) TV. You could make a case that the growth of the music industry was the catalyst which made teens one of the most attractive consumer groups to a whole range of industries from fashion through electronics.Comment

Although I agree their music was great, I think that their popularity was helped along by the fact that they came along at a time when TV went from black & white to colour.
They were the ultimate in novelty when novelty was in it's peak. The way they sounded, the way they spoke and by the way they looked etc. It's why they called it an "invasion", it was something very new.Comment
