In the history of jewish people this is very recent. Up until about 100 years ago you could not convert into judaism. Thus you were only jewish if you were born to a jewish mother.

So lets take out the last 100 years, if you were Jewish you had a full jewish lineage thus Jewish was your race. Why would it be different now considering your full lineage was jewish. The only difference now is you're allowed to convert into Judaism but at that point Jewish is not your race its simply your religion.

Keep in mind re intermarriage between races over the centuries. Most ethnic group did not intermarry into other societies or races, they stuck with their own. Its still not very common in todays world outside of western societies.

Historically speaking, they may not be distinct races per se, but each ethnicity has a unique genetic heritage. It's why Germans look different from British and British look different from Russians etc. White Americans look different than Europeans because they're a mix of various European ethnicities (various genetic heritages); so most of us are mutts in that respect. There are slight differences between race, ethnicity, and nationality.

OK, so french-canadian are a race: the québécois race

They would be an ethnicity, historically.French-Canadian is a nationality (in other words, any race can be french canadian). When I'm speaking about disctinctive features, I'm speaking about genetics. Each European ethnicity has a distinct genetic heritage. It's like the difference between black pigmyes (sp) and Bantus. Both are of the "Black race", but they're two seperate and distinct biological ethnicities due to different genetic heritage. That's why they are dramatically different in physical appearance.
