"NOT ENOUGH ROOM" ERROR When moving to a drive with plenty of space???

Ever get a "disk full" error when there is plenty of room??? I am trying to move avi video files and I have 2 now that will not move. The drive has 400gb+ free so thats not the problem, also it rejected the move when I tried to export as a new avi from Premiere Pro to the drive, got the not enough space error??? any ideas??? Drive is brand new

XP -- never seen anything like this before, 2 totally different files getting "rejected" for Disk Full - they are just straight avi files direct from minidv

Is one drive FAT32? If it's not NTFS, it won't fit. There's a max file size with FAT32. (Right click drive, Properties)

you just hit it - it is FAT32 - I'm not a drive expert, this is a 500GB WD external, can I convert it to NTFS?

You can convert it, but typically you'd have to do so with a reformat (losing any data already on the drive)

it didn't come with a disc, the autorun files came loaded on it / also it won't let me convert it in computer management. Is a total format the only option and will this cause problems as far as the autorun and access once its formated???

The easiest way to go about this is to:

1) Transfer ALL existing data on the drive (Make sure any hidden/system files are included) to another physical or network drive. This will allow the autorun data as well as anything else on the drive to be restored later.

2) Log out of Windows completely and boot to DOS or command prompt.

3) Format the drive using Windows' format utility. From the prompt:

FORMAT x: /FS:NTFS

Where "X" is the letter of the drive.

4) Boot back into Windows. Copy all backup data to the drive.

No, you do not have to format. From XP type the following:
Click start, go to All Programs, go to Accessories then click Command Prompt (alternatively click start/run/type cmd, press enter).

In the command prompt screen, type the following: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
EXAMPLE: convert C: /fs:ntfs

Make sure any important data is backed up just in case blah blah blah.

I used it back in 2k4 on all my old 98 drives... all worked flawlessly, but just in case I would always back up important irreplaceable data.

so it should keep what's already on the drive and convert to NTFS without erasing the files? It's just a ton of video files I'm moving from hardcopy dvd disc to the drive. no big deal if they erase - just reload them. (I'll back up the autorun files to be safe.)
