Pope John Paul II died Saturday night, a Vatican spokesman said. He was 84. "Our beloved holy father John Paul II has returned to his home. Let us pray for him," Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said in a written statement. Upon hearing the announcement, thousands gathered in St. Peter's Square bowed their heads to pray, some of them in tears. They then burst into applause.

HE's in safe hands now. He suffered long enough to bear our sins.
Mass everywhere today will be very sad as we begin to understand our loss.
