Tiny url redirection services.. What scripts, tools to make one?

Somebody posted looking for things like tinyurl.com

I am wondering about making such a service,,, Is it difficult, expensive, etc?

What tools & scripts would I require?

Is it worth the effort? Would It be profitable?

In what ways would I be able to monetize it other than framing the redirected site?

I am wondering if I could use my 3 char domains for such a thing?

profitable? Perhaps if you could delay the redirect for a few seconds to show an ad.... otherwise, I doubt it would generate much of an income.

even if it's framed with an ad at top or something?
I'm thinking that maybe the users would give the domain alot of linkbacks in SE.. for example if joe shmoe wants hiswebsitename.123.com & if 123.com was my domain & visitors went to visit 123.com to see what was there? & have it scripted to have all accountnames.123.com have frame so that small ad is at top.. something small like what thumblogger uses, & at footer have link to 123.com ??

Useless waste of time, or potential?

No offense and don't take this wrong, but if you don't know the answers to those questions before undertaking the process of building a service for the masses.... you shouldn't be in the business of creating services for the masses.

Stick to what you know... and know the answers to already

                Ohh.. forgot to add,

That service is nothing more (or more complicated) than a simple hit tracking script freely available on any script download website and mySQL
