If ever there was a mishmash of messing by a nation which is not even on the same continent as India or Pakistan - this is it.
Ironic that the US has now "accepted" Pakistan's nuclear program, tho there is always good reason. (Read, we can make a profit here and we have 50 ulterior reasons). So out go the sales pitches to do some arms trading with Pakistan and sell them a load of shit - including 50 F-16 fighter planes from the US. This may of course start causing more concern in India as well... but, again, there is always good reason for a snake to take a certain path.
As you may know, India has plans for a major pipeline project that would take gas to India from Iran via Pakistan. (Pipelines have always been a major concern of the US) There is now pressure from the US to persuade India to simply give up it's plans. (Read, we prefer to build pipelines and make sure they end up where we want them.)
As a teaser to India, Bush has now proposed assistance with India's nuclear program. Ironic again, since India is one of only three countries that has refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and progressed onwards to develop and test nuclear weapons - a subject frowned upon by the US (tho they have more nukes than anyone at enormous cost to the taxpayer)
Overall... the generosity/forgiveness/recognition (read, "we say what you like to hear today") by the US admin is awesome when there is a "need" for something
