The south without California is essentially a welfare state. Little or no production, no capital, completely uneducated public, etc. A little bit of oil is all you have.

If the South were to succeed from the United States it would be a third world nation dependent on aid from the north east. Basically like it is now, only you wouldn't get as much of it.
