          I use them on all my new sites, but some of my old ones get too much SE traffic on the root domains, so I'm afraid to change them.

                      yes I know it does, but that's not the issue.. The issue is the index pages are listed by the current content. If I took away that content and moved it too a new page.. I'm sure google would follow, however my listing in the serps might drop in the mean time.
