UN control of the internet is the biggest danger to adult business ever. They're going to have to justify their existence by censoring sites deemed harmful to the community.
Harmful to the community = "hate speech, obscenity, etc"
The first thing they'll do is tax all electronic transactions. Hello world tax. We'll all be paying fees to Visa that will eventually go to unelected UN officials
Ya'll are worried about Jesus freaks but the holy rollers have absolutely no political power. They can't even save a handicapped woman in Florida, do you think they can go up against the big money porno lawyers?Comment

Seriously Gator - that article ain't of any consequence - it's just the opinion of one man who heads that section.
There are serious possibilities in this, but depends on what angle, or member state interest, has some input/sway.
Example... It could be used to constructively organise/co-ordinate domain name issues and get people like iCann and others working together. These folks have not exactly had a smooth track record :-)
But... the sillier side is gonna come from member states who never think of anything other than "control" - basically control freak nations.
You are right, - the UN or any of it's sub orgs have nothing to do with either censorship or giving "moral opinions" or religous views - that is just too US and they got better shit to bother with.
From personal experience, I know the UN "sub orgs" are damned excellent at organising and making stuff happen - they have an very well-qualified staff, - ignoring the odd few who like to express personal views :-)XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

No.. why you think that?Originally posted by tony404arent they alittle late lol
I ain't either in favor or against some co-oridination of iCann type bodies, tho if they can't work together - it needs some framework, whether that is now or 20 years hence.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

Ya just hit back to that keyword "control" :-)
Na.. don't care who they are - it's better there is no actual control! But, if there is a level of organizational framework (nothing more!) over those who "think" they control it (iCann blah) - it may be useful.
Example.. iCann members have come out with some real weirdo shit from time to time and it may be better to cool that :-)Last edited by Webby; 03-29-2005, 03:23 PM.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

Well it sure beats ICANN's half assed efforts, sorry who controls the internet, ICANN or Verisign......oh nobody knows
Actually there are some stupid motions already, like having a .xxx TLD and forcing all pages that could be deemed adult to be located on .xxx I wonder if saying the word fuck on a forum is classed as 'adult content'.
Anyone pushing for internet control is way beyond "it's for the kids". Well if it's for the kids then you can supervise your kids and use 3rd party filter software. If your kid is determined to get through that, then don't you think it's time you actually talked to your own child?
The "it's for the kids" line is a crock of shit, what it means is "I don't agree with that content so i don't think anyone else should be allowed to see it" and well, tough shit to them.Comment

"But the ITU enjoys virtually no influence over the Internet. That remains the province of specialized organizations such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN; the Internet Engineering Task Force; the World Wide Web Consortium; and regional address registries."
Umm yeah OK...
Micosoft? Hello?
This has to be about the stupidest artical I have read as of late.
Unfortunatly the Internet is/was a military weapn. No one organisation will be capable of ever containing it. No Government, no institution. The internet does not need ICANN nor any other fabrication. At the core of the internet is the ability for Computers to network via a telephone wire. Anyone wanna control telecommunications in the world or near capable?
NONE>
NO ONE.
ZERO.

It's creeping in already. I got nothing against child protection, but kids ain't as stupid as adults, iCann and some politicians seem to think:-)
We are off on the "moral views" with a "domain name committee" - WTF it has it got to do with them? :-)XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

Where did you learn, or for what reason, do you hate an org that actually respresents and takes instructions from it's member nations? I think that is what they call democracy, tho several nations have a unbalanced sway in this

Why have a government that can't stay out of peoples lives? The US government was founded on certain principles that have pretty much been shuffled out of the way to fill certain political agendas. Anarchy in its purest form is a good thing. I suggest you read Plato. Stop being brainwashed by MTVs version of Anarchy used to sell products and control your thinking and do some research on Anarchy.Originally posted by GatorBWhy have goverments? every man for himself. no laws. I don't want any regulation. There really doesn't need to be any either; it just gives governments control over thought (which was always the case until the Internet). That said, it's tough trying to decide what's worse: the UN trying to find relevance in a world where the only super power ignores international law or having religious fundamentalists getting a law passed that a Supreme Court (which might be a little more religiously fundamentalist in the future) will uphold.
I don't know, it just depresses me thinking about it.Comment

The UN can't impose a tax on everything on the internet - that would be nearly impossible. Not to mention the Intenet opreates in countries with the UN has no authority what so ever. Can you imagine the fallout when the UN tries to shut down a site in Cuba? And the lawsuits that will come from it?
The Internet has been working fine all by itself.
Even the damn spam law hasn't changed anything, because US laws don't apply anyplace other than in the US.Herschel Savage

Na!! Not heard anything - apart from the don't pay *anyone*, including their own management company :-)
But, and no thanks to iBill - I hear EU webmasters may have got paid yesterday with the cooperation of the EU bank and several other parties. On the US side - just hoping they get thrown in jail soon and this will give the US banks some confidence there is justice and may encourage them to release US funds.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment
