Haven't tried webair, but if they ask for your id and you are legit you don't have anything to worry about. It's for your own protection.
I don't see why you are making such a big deal out of this unless you were going to use your account for something shady, this could explain your upset reaction.
When one could apply for .eu I applied for several domains, I also needed to fax my info and sign the forms. Such a little task isn't worth bothering about it.
