Wow are you shitting me
Whats a grading period now? 5-6 weeks?
@ 7 classes thats $280 for all A'S
Whats stopping him from paying a nerd $140 for doing his homework and tests for him.
The paying for grades system worked great when I was a kid but I think you're paying a little too much. I used to get $20/a and $10/b and nothing for anything lower.
Either way, this system did work for me, I had great marks all through high school.

If your kid is getting an "A" they are doing something terribly wrong..
To get an "A" in school requires you to turn yourself into a robot.
My daughter came home one time with 9 pages of addition and subtraction problems to fill out.
I had been teaching my daughter to add and subtract for a year previously, she understands the concept, she doesnt need to do 9 pages of the same fucking problems over and over because some kids dont understand it yet.
I told her to fill out the first page then i signed her homework and told her teacher to call me if she had a problem , but i wasnt going to waste her time making her fill out endless math problems.
Your child should get a's or b's on tests , everything else is gravy.
Unless your child is learning disabled , you should basically know when your child is doing good, and so should your child.
I dont think rewards for school is a good idea personally , your child should learn that learning isnt work , its something you do because of the benefits it brings you, not the rewards..
There are some kids who are brilliant but are so bored with homework that they never do it. *raises hand from experience* It got to the point with me that I just handed the report card over along with the paddle and a shrug. Punishment didn't change the fact that I was bored out of my mind, it just made me resentful and almost proud of the bad grades out of spite.
Payment didn't work either. Again, I didn't give a fuck. $10/A? Whoopdeshit.
If your kid already has good grades, keep encouraging but don't make it the focus of his life or he'll start to hate you for it and possibly become deliberately lazy. If he's already getting bad grades, instead of bribery or punishment, figure out the reason behind the grades. Is he too smart for the classes and thus bored? See if you can get him into accelerated classes. Is he having difficulty with one specific area? He may have a learning disability like I do, (I have something called dyscalculia, which is the inability to process numbers correctly), and you can have that tested.
A Sylvan learning center is a great place to take him. They don't use the "old" methods of teaching. Instead, they train their mentors to be MENTORS, teaching the child in a way that matches the way your child learns. They'll test him for you and offer ideas on how you can help as well.
Don't put it all on him. There might be something behind the veil that you are unaware of. Ask his teachers about his behavior, watch how he handles homework, and then ask around to find out how to get him tested.
Trust me - I've been there. Grade school blew GOATS for me. I graduated in the top 25% in High School.

Holy shit great post ..
And yes sylvan learning center is a great place. I had my son there. He had some of the same problems you mentioned. ( i.e. boredom )
I should have clariffied - he's in California, I'm in Wisconsin. I'm not there for him on a daily basis, so I'm just trying to be an influence in some way throughout his daily life. I'd move back in a heartbeat, but his mother is a good parent, and I have a daughter here who does NOT have that benefit - she needs me more, so I stay here.
WG, thanks for the answer. Everyone that said I should just beat him for bad grades - I would but that's hard to do across 2400 miles
I think paying a kid to get good grades is a good thing. When he moves out on his own, he will be earning cash for doing good at work, why not get the same thing on a smaller scale while in school?

Thanks. My experience sucked, and thank goodness my grandmother was a retired teacher and knew something was really wrong.
Is your son doing better after Sylvan? I was taught to tap into my creativity and relax into using it to accomplish the mundane, though I never went to Sylvan myself. I just had an awesome Mema. I have friends who did the Sylvan thing and had incredible results.
Teaching the child to focus on what they can and LIKE to do, and everything else really does fall into place.

Thanks for that Tala, that was god and I enjoyed reading it.
Same problem for me - school bored me, and I assume the same thing will happen to my son in the future. He's a smart kid but he has an F in Lit right now, there's no excuse for that except him not putting out any effort. I'm just trying to give him a reason to pay a liittle more attention.

Question: If you're going to DEDUCT for bad grades but you're in Wisconsin, how's that going to work exactly? And if you think he won't find a way around having to pay up, you're nuts. Kids are the world's BEST at finding ways around shit they don't wanna do.

Has he ever had issues with English or Reading? If you can trace something that would trigger a suspiscion, he might need help in that arena.
Could it be that the Lit he's having to endure is boring as fuck? Is he so good at English and Reading that it's just almost mocking to him to have to read this drivel? (That was my problem)
Try this: Have him re-write the story the way he thinks it should go. This ensures that he has to read it in order to see how it goes now, but he can have a great time re-writing it to make it however he sees fit. He gets to correct anything that seems just stupid to him, and thus it satisfies the creative part of him and helps to diminish his boredom as well.

Truthfully - there's no way he'll get more than one F, so I'm not worried about him having to weasel out of anything. My main goal is to get that one F up to at least a C, which he can do with aq minimal amount of motivation. I think I have done that with the current deal.
Oh, and he's coming out here for a month or so this summer, so pretty much immediately after the report cards get issued, we jump on a plane to get out here and I get to help him spend the money or invest it if I can talk him into it.
Thanks. My experience sucked, and thank goodness my grandmother was a retired teacher and knew something was really wrong.

Yes he does much better at school. he is no longer in sylvan , only because we dont live near one.
But the changes that he made from just being at sylvan were remarkable..
Instead of the usual " I HATE SCHOOL" speech everyday after school it was " I cant wait to get back to school and try to beat today's score. "
Learning became like an addictive video game for him.
I think the main problem is when a child is out of the range of other classmates , either too smart or not smart enough. They quickly become bored and find other things to amuse themselves with.
i had a friend that was paid if he got good grades also. Just tell them how good they are doing and if they slack off a little just telle m to pick it back up. You don't gotta reward them with with money. Just pay attention
You got it backwards... per class, here is my take:
A: $10
B: break even
C: 1 week grounded
D: 2 weeks grounded
any failure: grounded until the next report card.
Raise the bar!
Alex
If you want nice stuff, you have to work hard, and sometimes that includes doing stuff you don't like.. like paying attention and putting out effort in literature class. What the hell can you get with $70, assuming he gets all A's? Not much, IMO. I live a fortunate life, and when he's with me for this summer I'm not going to spoil him - he'll have whatever cash he earns via his grades this last quarter, anything beyond that I will find stuff for him to do to earn money. I think it's a good idea.
All A's No punishment
One B lose one finger or toe
One C lose two fingers or toes
One D Lose three fingers or toes
One F Lose one appendage.
Of course, you should allow them to choose whichever finger, toe or appendage that they are going to lose.... There's no reason to be barbaric with this.

Overall, I'm not really big on the whole "positive reinforcement" thing, but for kids I think it works out good.
When I was still in school I made good money and good grades, so I never got paid. But my dad did pay my brother for good grades. I said to him "what are you doing dad? Bribing him? Is that REALLY what you want him to learn?" His reply "if bribing him means good grades, earned knowledge, and a better shot at getting into a good college... then I can live with a little bribery." I thought about it for a bit, and he was right.
I think the situation for every kid is different. Bribery isn't going to work on every kid, especially if they already developed a hatred for school. But if you get to them early enough and instill the importance of working hard towards goals, I think you'll have success.
Sometimes school isn't hard enough. I had a stint of about 2 years where I didn't do well, I was extremely bored with classes and watching the other students be retards all the time got really tiring. Thank God for advanced classes.

they dont get graded here any more.. its some teacher assessment bullshit (above standards / meeting standards / below standards). kinda hard to reward / punish a kid cause you dont really know what the fucks going on.. teacher could just have been having a bad day when she "assessed".
It's retarded. the school better not fail my kid cause then they're going to get to assess my fucking lawsuit.
What happened to tests where you get a point for getting something correct and nothing for something wrong. Did that work too good? or did some fucknozzle parent sue because their childs feelings were hurt when they failed.
You guys thinking paying $10 for an A is stupid as shit. Kids who arent naturally smart have to work for hours and hours PER A. You think a little fucking $10 bill is going to be worth that effort? When I was in high school I asked my parents to give me $1k if I got straight A's. Wasnt worth the effort though I got B's with absolutely no homework, etc. So what was the point in even doing it
detoxed... it isn't about the amount of $$$, it is that on the downside, there is punishment or less enjoyable stuff for NOT doing well. Paying for everything over a ail is just teaching kids to "just make it" and that this is a reward for getting a C or a D in life.
That's exactly what I told him when I laid it out - "c's suck, you get nothing for being average." He *gasped* when I said "-$100 for f's" so I have high hopes for the deal. I only wish I had said -$50 for D's... that's what I get for spouting off without thinking it through all the way. Life as normal :D
my parents tried that "money for good grades" thing on me, but it never worked.
Like Tala, I was really bored with school. Just the surroundings of the school & classrooms kinda felt like a jail to me. The same white walls, the same old desks that sqeak, the same 100 yr old text books, etc etc
I felt like it was punishment for me to even be there. Most of the time, i just slept during class, and the other times, i was either skipping school or walking out of school in the middle of the day cuz i simply had enough of the 'jail' lol
But, come test time, I'd always pass (even though i slept during class 99% of the time). Even though I hated school, i did well enough to graduate and get the hell out of there (which was my biggest motovation LOL)
