Adult A.D.D. - Anyone here have it?

Just curious...I think I have it...I see there is some good medication for it...

Does anyone in here have it?

I don't know too much about it but the basics...And I feel like it kinda describes me...

ADD is just bullshit, just another "disease" defined by the government to bank on.

just fucking do what you need to do to overcome it, it's ALL mental.

don't pollute your body with those harmful drugs.

the second you think that your shortcomings are a result of something uncontrollable is the moment which you allow yourself to become a mentally weaker person. everyone is concerned with doing things the easy way, taking the shortcuts in life - and it creates for a weak character.

those pills that alter your mind are not healthy, and they don't fix the problem. they will hurt you in more ways than one. get serious and just fucking do what you need to do, change what you need to change - don't think about it, don't analyze it, don't contemplate it. just do it.

Contrary to the last post, Adult ADD (or any ADD for that matter) is not "all mental" or something that you can get rid of, simply by doing "what you need to do to overcome it". ADD is a real condition, and there are real treatments available. A significant part of my studies centered around Mental Health and I did a number of research projects in the area of ADD, both for children and adults.

There are a number of stimulant (amphetamine) based treatments available. Ritalin, Dexadrine, Concerta...and so on. A newer medicine, Strattera is non-stimulant based, and was introduced in the U.S. a couple of years back, and approved in Dec 2004 in Canada, but just released for sale on March 7th.

To find out if you truly have ADD, or ADHD (the H signifies hyperactivity) go to your medical practicioner. There are a number of standardized tests that have proven to be quite accurate in predicting the "symptoms" of ADD / ADHD. If the results are conclusive that you may have this ailment, then the Dr may choose to try either a stimulant or non-stimulant treatment on you. This should be administered concurrently with cognitive treatment. (behavioral)

The beauty of stimulant treatments is that if you have ADD / ADHD, the results are noticed almost immediately. Poeple with these characteristics will experience a paradoxal effect from the stimulant medication. They will not feel euphoria or edgy or high..instead they will feel that their thoughts are much more focused..and that they will generally feel much calmer. If you do not have add / adhd....you will feel the stimulant characteristics of the amphetamines.

As I stated when I started, ADD is a real disease. For those that have it, their careers, their relationships...their lives can be profoundly effected. If you think you might have it...see your doctor. And if they do not have the background in mental health diagnostics...have them send you to a specialist who does.

I do. It's awful, I cant even read a book because I zone out after a few pages.
Ill read something and forget what I just read.
I'm constantly interrupting people. I dumped a good friend because he was too long winded and listening to his long drawn out detailed stories was driving me nuts.

A lot of dangerous and biased information being passed off as fact in this thread. To anyone that thinks they may have add / adhd, and it is affecting your quality of life...read my post above and see you Dr.

To those who posted in the thread, congratulations if you were able to overcome what I would expect to be minor or misdiagnosed ADD / ADHD. But, understand, ADD is not a conspiracy by the government and the nation's medical practicioners. Some people truly require treatment..and for them it can literally change their lives...if they can get past the stigma attached to treatment, presented by the well meaning, but uninformed populace, such as demonstrated in this thread.

you sound like an infommercial dude.

out of all of the medicine prescribed to people who the doctors assumably diagnose ADD / ADHD with, probably only 1% of them actually have such a condition.

sure, go see a doctor as a last measure after you have genuinely exhausted all attempts to help yourself... not simply because you *think* you might have it, or because a friend said it helped him/her.

the very large majority of those who have trouble focusing or concentrating are those who are not plagued by a "chemical imbalance" or some uncontrollable variable, they're plagued by environmental factors like how their parents raised them, mainly - which is controllable with steady effort and patience. when changing from one mentality to another, there is always a transition period where it is difficult. if you REALLY force yourself to focus, then most people will find that in time it will become more natural and easier to do - just takes some rehabilitation. not a damn pill.

what thread are you reading? what was stated prior to your post that was dangerous? seems to me that strongly advocating for the use of pills is more dangerous than trying to rely on your mind drug free.

Nope...not an info-mercial..just medically and scientifically accurate facts. Something that I understand is unheard of on this board. But is provided to you not as heresay..but, as I stated above, as the result of post graduate studies and research in this field.

I understand that this is not a board for factual information. But, in matters regarding mental health...the layman's approach is well meaning, but inaccurate, and potentially dangerous.

So, to stay in the tradition of the board, to those of you who need help...don't get it from GFY. To the rest of you...Go Fuck Yourself.

yeah and I suppose you think vaccinations actually work too, right?

if you've done your extensive "research" on it, then please give is a basic rundown. if you honestly, genuinely think for one second that the majority of people who are prescribed ADD medication actually need it, then the material you've researched is flawed and biased.

And JaceXXX..if you were truly diagnosed with ADD, then congratulation on having a case that did not need drug intervention. But people like you should really know better then to make blanket statements like you have.

To put it another way...I am sitting at my computer right now....with a slight heart murmer. So yes, I could say I have heart disease. Now suppose the father of the family in the house next door has a defective valve and needs to take heart medication. We both have "heart disease" ...but I'm certainly not going to run over next door and say..."Hey, I don't take medication for my heart disease..so you don't need it either".

Same goes for ADD ADHD...many symptoms are grouped under the titles ADD ADHD, but the symptoms and the response to drug intervention vary greatly as does the need for drug intervention.

Many of you have missed the basic point. I do not in any manner say that "ALL people who have ADD / ADHD need drug therapy". I DO SAY, just because drug treatment wasn't necessary for you, doesn't mean it isn't needed for someone else..and vise versa.

once again, attributed to environment. sitting on the computer hour after hour, day after day, year after year without little to no physical activity and/or social interaction (in the case of some geeks) will naturally develop poor health / poor social skills. but certainly not anything that can't be fixed by natural means, like uhm... exercising / eating right / joining society ;)

I like people who think people who take medication for anxiety disorders, depression and the like, are somehow "not themselves", or are "high on drugs". I take effexor to curb an anxiety disorder, and if it does anything, it makes me more myself than I could ever be if I was unable to leave my house because of an anxiety attack.

People who claim you're better off without medication to treat disorders are the same people who are unfit to be parents. "Oh my son is just a normal little boy".. never mind Jr. can't stay focused for 10 minutes, gets in trouble at school and eventually ends up stealing cars and snorting crack because his parents were too fucking ignorant to fess up he ever had a problem.

Edit: Imagine you're sitting in a closet and outside that closet are 10 werewolfs. You have nothing to protect yourself, you're naked, and the werewolfs have cought onto the scent of your blood. That's what an anxiety disorder can be like, you can be that terrified. Since I've been in a few situations where it's been that bad, I'm lucky I take medication, as it seriously lowers the 'terror' factor involved with normal every day things.

(Insert sarcasm here). Yes, overall vaccinations do work.

those diseases were eradicated not because of the vaccinations, but because of improved living conditions. please link me to an article on the web, or point me to a doctor that will prove that vaccinations work, you won't find it. there is no proof what-so-ever, that vaccinations work. however there is extensive evidence / research that shows how truly detrimental vaccinations can be, PARTICULARLY childhood vaccinations.

but as I was saying, ADD / ADHD = a reality for maybe 1% of the diagnosed cases. the rest of the 99% = a simple problem of motivation and self discipline.

And what's with the exageration about the parents "popping every pill imaginable into their childrens mouth"? And acting normal? I was unaware being unable to concentrate for more than 20 seconds was normal. I was also unaware behavioural disorders were "normal". Kids who're normal goto school, learn something new, act like you'd expect a kid to act, and aren't annoying to be around. Kids who're not normal goto school, get in trouble because they talk to much, dont learn a thing because they cant concentrate, and are insanely annoying to be around because of hyperactivity.

Infact, I feel pretty good today, a far reach from four or five years ago when I would sleep all day and wish I'd never been born because I could barely leave the house. Now I go out lots, I have friends, I enjoy life, unlike before.

the problem i have is with people who look directly to drugs as a solution (a temporary solution at that) without examining their lifestyle and attempting to make changes - this can be observed with people who have so called obesity, depression, anxiety, gambling, cheating, ADD disorders/diseases.

SPANK your child if they're disobediant, show STRENGTH, don't be their friend, be their PARENT - set rules, boundries... but also show love and affection. most parents fall too much on either side, when you need to impliment a mix of both discipline and love. those that abuse their children, or don't discipline them at all, are usually the parents of the children you're referring to.

                                                                                                  3) I'm probably bipolar, and I've read too much about the drugs associated with it, and the last time I saw a shrink (which wasnt by choice :-\ ) she wanted me on those instead

so you can guess why I would do this.
I understand..but please also understand...many of the drugs, including Adderall and Adderall XR can be potentially very dangerous for people with bipolar. They can cause mania, seizures or a serious depressive episode.

Plus, Adderall is metabolized by the p450 enzyme. Many antidepressants and mood stabalizers are also metabolized by this same enzyme. The result...one drug may effectively cancel out the effect of another drug..or can cause the opposite...a very dangerous multiplying of the toxicity of the medications...greatly increasing side effects. (Although you didn't say if you were on any other medications).

Most people don't realize this, but your doctor or pharmasist has taken extensive training to ensure that contradicting medicines are not co-administered. Granted, mistakes are made...but to make a long story short...if you do have bipolar, you have a whole need world of potential dangers to contend with. Your health is worth it..talk to a doctor.
