Furthermore, that was after NK began developing warheads. They stirred a hornets nest when they decided to join the arms race...40 yrs after it started and 20 yrs after ended. They are a weapon of deterrance...I personally don't think kim jong il understands that...he just wants to be a world power who has no connections with the world at all. Just Bombs.
3. What was NK's response about reunification by the way? Japan and north Korea don't get along. Neither do SK and NK....see news story:

US does invade countries sometimes. Not always for the better. What you don't understand is that the US will not invade NK unless it invades Sk. Which isn't going to happen. The US didnt start this x amount of years ago and like usual, the UN couldnt do anything about it. Without action the problem didnt go away. The cycle continues.
