Trust me, with some of these things it would not be safe to have 7 or 8 people standing next to each other setting them off.
I set one mortar off last night at a friends. They told me to do it over by the diving board, which was fine . . . .until I lit it and realized I had to navigate down a set of steps in the dark to get away before it went off. I only got 10-15' away and had flash burns to my eyes and my ears were ringing for 5 minutes afterwards.
