an engine with adequate torque does not need many transmission gears.
add shifting gears to a car like a ford mustang is hype, a function of the marketing dept., it does not improve performance, only narrows the ratios between overal gearing. it does give the "performance oriented" driver more fun though, he may think it makes the car go faster. in truth it will probably be slower due to more time shifting.
usually you will see more gears with less horsepower to weight ratio---(18 wheeler trucks, 600cc motorcycles, etc).
and it is true you can drive off in 2nd gear from a dead stop easily in a mustang.
