6th gear is basically to keep rpm's low at higher speed which will save gas... besically with 5 speed you can go lets say 120mph at 5500rpm, but with 6th gear you will do 120mph at lets say 3500rpm which will save gas...
6 speed usually has shorter throws, but 5speed has longer throws which means you will be in power band longer before switcing gears... i hope it made senceComment

Depending on the trans fifth will be a 1.2 or 1.5 to 1 overdrive and 6th will be heavier.
But one some model transmisions first gear has a real short rpm ratio top out so you can hardly get moving in it before you need to shift.
either way just play with it and get used to it.
