You really need to put in some info on what you bbq and so on.
Do you need or want the ability to use pots and pans on it?
Do you grill or do you actually bbq?
Is smoke flavoring important to you?
Is this something you want that is portable, enclosed, or med-large semi portable?
How many do you normally cook for, hold parties often?

Don't use gas. Cooking with gas isn't actually BBQing, it's just cooking outdoors.

You can get some really good gas BBQ's and they come with lava rocks and make sure the grill is good bars are solid good quality.
Some gas BBQ's have the option to fire up left or right hand side and if they have a cover you will find that the quality gas BBQ's also will have one side burn hotter than the other which creates convection, like an oven.

Read some on the reviews on the web to see what the actual benefits are compared to coal

I'm in Kansas City which is the BBQ capital of the world so I am kind of a BBQ snob.

If you buy a gas grill here, people give you dirty looks on the way out of the store.

Cool someone from kansas. Please explain the difference in grilling and BBQ'ing. Many on the west coast do not seem to understand the difference.

*edit, only need to go into woods and such if you wish*
